    General rules for success

    1. Come to class prepared and on time.

    2. Have permission before speaking or moving around the room.

    3. Do not disturb the learning of others

    4. Treat others with respect.

    Grading

    -        Allgrades are based on a percentage 0-100%

    -        Participation,effort and/or accuracy will be evaluated based on the nature of the assignment.

    -        Latework with an excused absence will be accepted but it is up to the student to come and get the assignment during homebase upon return to school.

    Units & Tentative Sequence of the6th grade Social Studies Curriculum
     

    -            Following each unit name are a few sample topics from each unit.

    Common Core: Prehistoric period through 1500
     

    A)        Archeology and the Prehistoric World:  Artifacts,Pangaea, Ice Age Hunter/Gatherers, and Stone Age

                   B)        Early Humans : Agricultural revolution and permanent settlements, Human dispersal,Neolithic Age               
                     C)      Mesopotamia and the Fertile Crescent (Iraq): Gilgamesh, Hammurabi

      D) Egypt and other Early African Empires: Hieroglyphics and the         

         Rosetta Stone, Pyramids/ Mummification, Polytheism

      E)      Chinese Dynasties: The Great Wall, Terra Cotta Army, Confucius

      F)      Indus River Valley Societies (Gupta, Kush, Persia): Caste System, Hinduism, Buddhism

                 G)      Ancient Greeks: Democracy,Athens and Sparta, Mythology, Alphabet & Greek/Latin roots

     H)       Roman Empire (Eastern and Western): Byzantine Empire, Republic/Representative form of             government,   Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii

     I)        Early Meso and South American Civilizations: Maya, Aztecs, Inca

                J)        Middle Ages (prior to 1500): Judaism and Christianity, Feudal System, Knights/Castles, Crusades, Reformation, Early Exploration

     

    Unit Duration- I am planning on covering two and a half units per quarter or roughly 15-18 lessons each unit.

     

    The Key Questions Each Unit Will Address:

     

    1.        Location/Physical Characteristics of the Place

    2.        Why the civilization grew and declined

    3.        Achievements(Impact on neighbors & our society today)

    4.        Important historic figures, events and basic culture( art, literature religion)

     

    ***Textbooks are used for some topics more than others. An online textbook is available. Login information will be shared when we first use the textbook.

    *** After we finish one of the main topics above you may clean out the social studies portion of your binder. Do not throw these things away however keep them at home especially graded work.
