WELCOME TO FIRST GRADE 2022-2023First Grade Reading Policy:Students should read a minimum of 10-15 minutes nightly. This will include student Letterland lists. The homework portion of the list is not required to be returned to the classroom but is good practice to complete at home.HandwritingYour child is now learning to form letters using the Letterlanders and the Letterland program.ProjectsIt is imperative that your child become accustomed to doing at-home projects at this age. Time management and creativity skills are crucial areas to develop during this stage of elementary school. The first grade teachers may assign small projects throughout the year that align with units of study. Please be sure to allow your child to do the work and show their creativity.

Letterland – Direct phonics instruction
Shared Reading/Mini Lesson
Students will be engaged in an interactive read aloud that will provoke questioning and deeper meaning of the text. The teacher will model how to think while reading, as well as demonstrate basic reading skills.
Guided Reading Groups
Reading groups will be done in a workshop model where students will be taught a skill or technique in a brief lesson and then encouraged to read independently while the teacher conferences with student groups.
Writing
Students will be taught a writing skill or technique in a brief lesson and encouraged to write for an extended period of time. The teacher will conference with students individually to gather information and keep track of improvements.
Social Studies
Several Social Studies units will be taught in these two subject areas. They will be rotated throughout the year as determined by the grade level as well as integrated into other units of study.

Math/Mini Lesson/Rotations
Math will be taught in a workshop model like reading and writing. A concept will be taught briefly, in a mini lesson or in whole group, utilizing the smartboard, or small hands-on math circle. Students will build and create their own math notebook to reference throughout the units.
Students will be grouped by ability to engage in interactive “play” or activities. These activities range from board games to computer games, to worksheets, to individual assessments, to basic card games. The activities will be based on their individual levels and changed frequently.

Science
A several Science units will be taught in these two subject areas. They will be rotated throughout the year as determined by the grade level as well as integrated into other units of study.

Pack-Up/Dismissal
We encourage all transportation changes to be made by 10am. You MUST notify the front office, the teacher, and any other third party (day care, carpool, etc.) independent of us. We are not responsible for contacting them during the instructional day.
