Miss Jana

My name is Ms. Jana! I am a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments and Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist. I graduated from Florida State University with my masters in education. When I'm not working with students, I am taking my dog, Callie, for walks to a local coffee shop. I am SO EXCITED to work with you and your family this school year!

  • What does a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) do?

    Posted by:

TVI's are charged with teaching the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC). The ECC areas are: assistive technology, orientation and mobility, social skills, independent living skills, compensatory access, recreation and leisure activities, career education, sensory efficiency, and self-determination. These areas are considered important for a student to grow into a productive and well-rounded member of society. Many times, we learn skills in the ECC through vision as we go through life, incidentally. Children with visual impairments, however, may miss out on important concepts about how the world works. That is where the TVI comes in, to fill the gaps!

  • What is orientation and mobility?

Simply put: Getting from point A to point B safely and efficiently. Knowing where you are, where to go, and how to get there!

  • Who teaches orientation and mobility (O&M)?

    Posted by:

An orientation and mobility specialist teaches children and adults orientation and mobility. You may see OMS or COMS (certified orientation and mobility specialist) behind their names and that means they are the real deal!

    Simple enough, right?
