Ms. Katie Thomas

Bonjour!  This will be Ms. Thomas's 7th year teaching French to 8th and 9th grade students at MBJH. From studying abroad to working in France, Ms. Thomas has seen the impact that learning French can have on your life. She also uses French to reconnect with friends and explore new places, traveling to France as much as possible. This past summer she traveled down France's Atlantic Coast and last summer she went to the Provence and Côte d'Azur regions.

Ms. Thomas graduated with undergraduate degrees in French and English from Sewanee, studying abroad in Paris while living with a host family for the fall semester of her junior year.  After graduating, she had the opportunity to teach English classes at the University of Nantes in France for two years. Then she lived with a host family in Paris as an au pair while also taking French classes. Next, she continued her studies of French language and literature abroad at The University of Nottingham, England, completing a Master's in Comparative Literature.  Afterwards, she went on to complete a Master's degree in Education: French K-12 at UAB.

What makes French unique from other languages at MBJH?

♦ We celebrate French holiday traditions with our Bûche de Noël (yule log cake) competition every December and Chandeleur, an in-class crêpe making day, every February. We also make masks and try king cake for Mardi Gras.

♦ We participate in state French Convention in February, where students use their talent and creativity to compete in different events and levels. This year's theme is "L’Impressionnisme: Un coup de pinceau, un coup de cœur !" (for more info see: https://frenchconvention.org/)

♦ We allow students to retake assessments where they scored below expected proficiency standards, so that students can show they have learned concepts and demonstrated mastery of skills before moving on! Ms. Thomas is dedicated to helping you improve your French and she is available for extra tutoring or retakes before school or during AO.
