CPM Course 1 – Chapter 4

Variables and Ratios
In this chapter, students get a  look at the concept of using a variable to represent an unknown quantity.  The themes are variables and ratios.  During this chapter:

  • Students build understanding of how to visualize and reason about situations with unknowns (variables) , which will build a firm foundation for future learning about abstract manipulation of symbols.
  • Students are introduced to the concepts of scale factor, similarity, and ratios.  They then use ratios to compare numbers and quantities as well as to solve problems.
