5th Grade Unit 4 – Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

Unit Overview

Content Focus –

Students work to represent the meaning of fractions, decimals, and percents and the relationship among them.  Students will work to understand and represent multiplying and dividing fractions by whole numbers and by other fractions.

Looking Back…

Students have developed an understanding of the meaning of fractions and what they represent.  They have worked with fractions a part of a single object as well as a part of a set (eg- find 1/3 of the class).  They have worked with mixed numbers, explored the meaning of addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplied a fraction by a whole number.

Looking Forward…

Later in the year, students will continue building their understanding of fractions and the relationship between fractions and decimals.  They will build on their previous understanding to multiply and divide decimals.
