4th Grade Unit 3 – Multiplication and Division

Unit Overview

Content Focus –

Students focus on multiplication and division and continue the development of computational fluency.  A major emphasis of this unit is that students can represent the meaning of multiplication and division using pictures, diagrams and models.

Looking Back…

In the first 4th grade unit, students worked with arrays as a representation of multiplication.  They continued to build fluency with combinations to 12×12, and expanded their understanding to work with multiplication problems involving greater numbers.

Looking Forward…

Students will continue to work on multiplication and division later in the year.  They will work solving multiplication problems with larger numbers while making connections and extending their understanding of division.  Students will develop strategies to calculate and keep track of all the parts of larger, more complex problems.
