3rd Grade Unit 7 – Fractions

Unit Overview

Content Focus –

Students work to understand and represent fractions using fraction notation.  They work to combine fractions using representations and models.

Looking Back…

In 2nd grade, students began developing an understanding of what fractions are and how to work with equal shares.  They worked with halves, thirds and fourths.  The foundational ideas in 2nd grade were: a fraction represents part of a whole and that the part it represents is one or more equal parts which together make the whole.

Looking Forward…

In 4th and 5th grade, students continue using representation, models and context to understand and operate with fractions.  Students work more extensively with the idea of a fraction as a number and work towards making connections between fractions, decimals and percents.
