2nd Grade Unit 7 – Fractions

Unit Overview

Content Focus –

Students build the foundation that they will use in grades 3-5 and beyond as they work with fractions, decimals and percents.  They will work to understand fractions as equal parts of a whole as well as exploring terms and notation associated with fractions.

Looking Back…

Students bring with them many ideas about fractions before 2nd grade.  They often encounter fractions in situations in which they share or have to distribute equal groups.

Looking Forward…

In 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students continue developing ideas about representing, modeling and contextualizing  fractions.  Students work more extensively with the idea of a fraction as a number and work towards making connections between fractions, decimals and percents.
