1st Grade Unit 5 – Measurement

Unit Overview

Content Focus –

Students explore concepts related to linear measurement.  They also work to build a foundation of fractional understanding.

Looking Back…

In Kindergarten, students made direct comparisons to determine longer than and shorter than and using nonstandard units to measure objects (paper clips, hands, etc.).

Looking Forward…

In 2nd grade, students will expand on these ideas as they explore using different sized units and what the implications are when measuring objects.  They will continue to formalize their technique by using rulers and other measuring tools and working with inches, feet, centimeters and meters.
