1st Grade Unit 1 – Addition

Unit Overview

Content Focus –

In this unit students work developing strategies to count quantities by 1s, adding 2 numbers to make 10, and making sense of and modeling addition problems with small numbers.

Looking Back…

This work is supported by the work students did in the 3 number units in kindergarten.  Most of their work was around counting, learning the counting sequence and making connections to quantity.  Students encountered addition and subtraction situations by playing games and composing and decomposing numbers.

Looking Forward…

Later in the year, students will count and compare larger quantities.  They will continue composing and decomposing numbers into different parts, looking at several ways to do so.  They will focus on the operation of addition, and as the year goes on how it relates to subtraction.
