Kathie Tagwerker recognized as Oregon School Employees Association’s employee of the year
The young students were eating lunch last week when Kathie Tagwerker made her way through the buzz of socializing kindergarteners and first graders in the cafeteria at Spring Creek Elementary School. The longtime 4J food service worker approached and greeted one student, and then raised and vigorously shook a maraca to bring the other students to attention. With all eyes on her, she led the students in a birthday cheer for the pupil beside her, a brief celebration she orchestrates for every Spring Creek student on their birthday.
“I always say I have an extra 300 grandchildren here,” she said afterward. “I really feel that way.”
A week earlier, it was a surprised Ms. Tagwerker who found herself at the center of a celebration that erupted around her when the Oregon School Employees Association named her its statewide 2022 Employee of the Year. OSEA represents about 20,000 classified workers statewide, primarily in the education sector.
The union cited Ms. Tagwerker’s decades-long work with OSEA to represent the district’s classified workers and make 4J a better place to work and learn, as well as her tireless commitment to the nutrition and health of students. “Her big heart and passion for supporting students make her a leader in her school and community, and the impact she makes is truly inspiring,” OSEA President Lisa Gourley said.

OSEA President Gourley made the announcement at the union’s meeting at Sheldon High School on May 19, catching Ms. Tagwerker completely off guard. Ms. Tagwerker, who has been involved with the union since she started working with Eugene School District 4J more than 34 years ago, currently serves on the executive board of the local OSEA chapter that represents 4J’s support staff. She also has served on OSEA Chapter 1’s food service committee, scholarship committee and bargaining team, supported various chapter events, and lobbied several times with OSEA in Washington, D.C.
“I feel very humbled because I just do what I feel is right when I support people with the union,” she said. “And when I’m doing my job taking care of the kids, I just love it. It means a lot to me. “
Since joining the district in 1987, she worked in the kitchen at several schools before moving to Spring Creek in 2009. She also worked as a Life Skills educational assistant during the summer for more than than 20 years. She is well known to students and staff alike for her humor, warmth and empathy.
“She brings joy, humor and love to serving our students,” said Sebastian Bolden, principal of Spring Creek. “There isn’t a single person in our school community who doesn’t love, adore and respect her.”

Los jóvenes estudiantes estaban almorzando la semana pasada cuando Kathy Tagwerker se abrió camino a través del bullicio de los niños de kindergarten y primer grado socializando en la cafetería de la Escuela Primaria Spring Creek. La trabajadora de mucho tiempo de 4J se acercó y saludó a un estudiante, y luego levantó y sacudió vigorosamente una maraca para llamar la atención de los otros estudiantes. Con todos los ojos puestos en ella, dirigió a los estudiantes en una alegría de cumpleaños para el alumno que estaba a su lado, haciendo una breve celebración que ella organiza para cada estudiante de Spring Creek en su cumpleaños.

Una semana antes, fue Tagwerker quien fue sorprendida porque se encontraba en el centro de la celebración que estalló a su alrededor cuando la Asociación de Empleados Escolares de Oregón la nombró Empleada del Año 2022. La OSEA representa a unos 20,000 trabajadores clasificados a nivel estatal, principalmente en el sector educativo.
El sindicato citó el trabajo de décadas de Tagwerker con OSEA para representar a los trabajadores clasificados del distrito y hacer de 4J un mejor lugar para trabajar y aprender, así como también su incansable compromiso con la nutrición y la salud de los estudiantes. “Su gran corazón y pasión por apoyar a los estudiantes la convierten en una líder en su escuela y comunidad, y el impacto que ella produce es verdaderamente inspirador.” dijo Lisa Gourley la presidenta de OSEA.
La presidenta de OSEA Gourley, hizo el anuncio en la reunión del sindicato en la Preparatoria Sheldon el 19 de mayo, sorprendiendo completamente a la Sra. Tagwerker, quien ha estado involucrada con el sindicato desde que comenzó con 4J hace más de 34 años, sirve actualmente en la junta ejecutiva de OSEA como representante del personal de apoyo de 4J. Ella también sirvió en el sindicato 1 de OSEA del comité de servicio de comida, el comité de becas y el comité de negociaciones, apoyó varios eventos del sindicato y cabildeó varias veces con OSEA en Washington, D.C.
“Me siento muy honrada porque solo hago lo que creo que es correcto cuando apoyo gente con el sindicato”, dijo. “Y cuando estoy haciendo mi trabajo cuidando a los niños, me encanta. Significa mucho para mí. “
Desde que se unió al distrito en 1987, trabajó en la cocina de varias escuelas antes de mudarse a Spring Creek en 2009. También trabajó como asistente educativa de Life Skills durante el verano durante más de 20 años. Ella es bien conocida por los estudiantes y el personal por su humor, calidez y empatía.
“Ella trae alegría, humor y amor al servicio de nuestros estudiantes”, dijo Sebastian Bolden, director de Spring Creek. “No hay una sola persona en nuestra comunidad escolar que no la ame, la adore y la respete”.
