District residents are invited to apply for appointment to vacant position on school board
The Eugene School District is soliciting applications for a new school board member.
Evangelina Sundgrenz, an elected member of the school board since 2017, has resigned from the board effective June 30, as her family is moving away from the Eugene area.
A new board member will be appointed to serve through June 30, 2021. Appointment is by public vote of the Eugene School Board. If the appointee wishes to serve longer, she or he must run for public election in May 2021.
How to apply: The application form is available on this website or at the 4J Education Center, 200 N. Monroe St., Eugene. Applications must be submitted by Wednesday, July 31, at 5 p.m.
Process: The Eugene School Board will interview applicants on Monday, August 5 and will vote to appoint a new board member at a special meeting of the board on Thursday, August 8. Board meetings are held at the 4J Education Center, 200 N. Monroe St., and are live streamed and broadcast on the radio on KRVM 1280-AM.
Requirements: Under Oregon law, board members must be registered voters in Eugene School District 4J, and must have lived in the district for at least one year at the time of appointment.
Eugene School Board positions are non-partisan and are not connected to any specific region. Applicants do not need to be parents of students in 4J schools. Employees of Eugene School District 4J and of charter schools within the district are not eligible for appointment. School board and committee members are not paid.
Service: Service on the Eugene School Board is a significant commitment. Regular school board meetings are usually the first and third Wednesdays of each month, at 7 p.m. The 4J Budget Committee, which includes the seven members of the school board, meets on Monday evenings, typically at least once in January and twice in May. Additional evening meetings and other events are scheduled as needed.
