Stunning STEM school
Arts & Technology Academy, a neighborhood middle school with a STEM focus, has been reconstructed in place. Its previous school building—which originally housed Jefferson Junior High—was constructed in 1957 and was in poor condition. The reconstruction project replaced ATA’s existing building with primarily new construction around the renovated, expanded and converted gymnasiums of the original building.
The design and layout of the new building supports Arts & Technology Academy’s innovative instructional program that integrates science, technology, engineering, math and the arts. With a large project room and interactive classroom located at the core of the school, the building is designed to encourage group and project-based learning.
Rowell Brokaw Architects and Opsis Architecture designed the new building, in consultation with a design advisory committee and with input from students, parents, staff, neighbors and community members. Local company John Hyland Construction was the general contractor that brought the vision to reality.
Thanks to our community
We couldn’t have done it without you! Four years ago, our community came together and voted overwhelmingly to support our public schools. The successful 2013 bond measure provided funding for Eugene School District 4J to replace four aging and inefficient school buildings, improve some other facilities, and update education materials to improve teaching and learning.
Arts & Technology Academy is one of the four school buildings replaced thanks to our community’s support of the bond measure. The grand opening of the new River Road/El Camino de Río Elementary School will be celebrated the following week, on Thursday, Oct. 5 (learn more & invite your friends). The two other new school buildings funded by the 2013 bond measure—Roosevelt Middle School and Howard Elementary School—opened last fall.
