If approved, 5 school days would be restored and classes would end June 22
This winter has been unusually severe. Many Oregon districts, including Eugene School District 4J, have had to close schools on several days due to hazardous weather.
A typical year in Eugene might have 0 to 3 weather closures. This year Eugene has had 6 weather closure days so far—and winter isn’t over yet. Given the exceptionally large number of weather days, the district has been working in collaboration with the teachers’ association to consider options for recovering lost instruction time.
The school board will consider and take action on a proposed revised calendar at its next meeting on Wednesday, February 1.
The proposed calendar change would restore 5 school days to this year’s calendar. Four days would be added at the end of the school year in June. The final day for students would be Thursday, June 22; Friday would be the grading day for teachers. The fifth school day would be restored during the school year, on days previously set aside as no-school days for teacher planning and professional development—March 17 for middle and high schools and May 5 for elementary schools.
Other changes in the proposed calendar revision include moving certain grading, progress report and conference days. The third trimester would begin after spring break, and students would be out of school for spring break, grading and weekends for the span of Saturday, March 25–Monday, April 3. The middle and high school early-release day for third trimester progress reports would be delayed from May 5 to May 12, and the elementary no-school day for parent conferences and grading would be delayed from June 9 to June 16. High school graduation ceremony dates would remain the same.
When a revised calendar is approved by the school board, it will be widely communicated through the district website, social media, news media, email, and more.
