Eugene School District 4J is seeking community members interested in serving on the district’s volunteer budget committee and equity committee. There are multiple openings on both committees. Applications are due Wednesday, September 28.
The budget committee examines the district’s budget and approves a budget to recommend to the school board for adoption. There are two openings for positions previously held by committee members whose terms have expired. Members with expired terms may reapply. The three-year terms run through June 30, 2019. The equity committee’s mission is to advise the district and act as community catalyst in improving student success among students from racial and ethnic minority groups and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, GLBTQ students, students who have disabilities and students who speak languages other than English. How to apply
There are two steps to the application process: Candidates must submit an application by Wednesday, September 28. Budget committee candidates should attend the school board meeting on Wednesday, October 5, at 7 p.m., and briefly speak about their interest in and qualifications for the position, at the 4J Education Center, 200 N. Monroe St., Eugene. Equity committee candidates will be contacted to arrange next steps.
The board will appoint applicants to the committees on Wednesday, October 19, at 7 p.m.
Requirements
Budget committee applicants must be registered voters and must live within the boundaries of Eugene School District 4J. Equity committee applicants are not required to live in 4J but preference will be given to district residents. Applicants do not need to be parents of students in 4J schools. Eugene School District employees are not eligible to apply for appointment to either committee.
Term of service
The budget committee is expected to meet several times over the school year, beginning in or around December. Meetings are normally scheduled on Monday evenings. New appointees may also be expected to participate in an orientation in the fall. The appointed members will serve through June 30, 2019. If an appointee wishes to serve longer, she or he may apply for reappointment in 2019.
The equity committee meets once each month. Subcommittees may meet more often than that. Meetings of the full committee are normally scheduled on Thursday afternoons. The appointed members will fill positions with specific term lengths. If an appointee wishes to serve longer, she or he may apply for reappointment at the end of the term.
