The Eugene School Board is seeking community members interested in serving on the district’s volunteer budget committee and equity committee. There are two openings for multi-year terms on each committee. Applications are due Thursday, Oct. 15.
The budget committee provides budget advice and direction, examines the district’s entire budget, and recommends a budget to the school board. The school board will select two applicants to fill positions previously held by Jennifer Winters Francois and Tim Gleason, whose terms expired on June 30. Members with expired terms may reapply. The equity committee’s mission is to advise the district and act as community catalyst in improving student success among students from racial and ethnic minority groups and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, GLBTQ students, students who have disabilities and students who speak languages other than English. There are two openings, one to complete a term that ends June 30, 2017, and one for a full three-year term that runs through June 30, 2018. (learn more)
How to apply
There are two steps to the application process: Candidates must submit an application by Thursday, Oct. 15 at 5 p.m., then should attend the school board meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 pm., and briefly speak about their interest in the position. The board will vote to appoint two applicants to each committee at the following board meeting, on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. Both meetings will be held at the 4J Education Center, 200 N. Monroe St., Eugene.
Requirements
Budget committee applicants must be registered voters and must live within the boundaries of Eugene School District 4J. Equity committee applicants are not required to live in 4J but preference will be given to district residents. Applicants do not need to be parents of students in 4J schools. Eugene School District employees are not eligible to apply for appointment to either committee.
Term of service
The budget committee is expected to meet several times over the school year, beginning in or around December. Meetings are normally scheduled on Monday evenings. New appointees may also be expected to participate in an orientation in the fall. The appointed members will serve through June 30, 2018. If an appointee wishes to serve longer, she or he may apply for reappointment in 2018.
The equity committee meets once each month. Subcommittees may meet more often than that. Meetings of the full committee are normally scheduled on Thursday afternoons. The appointed members will serve through June 30, 2017 or June 30, 2018. If an appointee wishes to serve longer, she or he may apply for reappointment at the end of the term.
