Eugene School District 4J has a new superintendent. Dr. Gustavo Balderas began his new role as 4J superintendent on July 1, 2015, succeeding Dr. Sheldon Berman, who departed on June 30, 2015.
Dr. Balderas has been an educator for 25 years, mostly in Oregon. Before becoming superintendent of Eugene School District 4J, he served as superintendent in two California school districts. For the preceding 20 years Dr. Balderas was a teacher and educational administrator in Oregon, primarily in the Hillsboro School District near Portland. He is the co-founder and past president of the Oregon Association of Latino Administrators.
The Eugene School Board selected Dr. Balderas to be the district’s next superintendent after conducting a nationwide search and gathering significant public input.
When his selection was announced, Dr. Balderas said, “I am deeply humbled to be offered this opportunity and eager to join the 4J team. The Eugene community’s support for and engagement with public schools are truly exceptional, as is the district’s commitment to providing quality education even in difficult circumstances. I’m looking forward to returning to my home state of Oregon, setting down roots in Eugene, and engaging with the district and the community to carry forward that tradition of excellence.”
