Common Core State Standards & Smarter Balanced Assessment: Parent information night for families of students with disabilities (K–12)

What are the Common Core State Standards? How are these new expectations for student learning different from the standards Oregon had in place before? How will assessments of students’ learning change to address the new standards? Most of all, what do these changes mean for students with disabilities, and for their parents?
Things are changing in your student’s classroom, in homework, and in assessments of his or her learning. State standards and assessments have been in place for many years, but they have been very different from state to state. Now, Oregon and more than 40 other states across the country have developed and adopted shared academic expectations, called the Common Core State Standards. They are clear, consistent guidelines for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in math and English language arts in order to be ready to graduate with an Oregon diploma, ready for life, work, and further education and training.
Parents of students with disabilities are invited to a parent information night on Dec. 15. You’ll learn more about Oregon’s changing academic standards and assessments and get answers to your questions. Together, we will support your student’s success in school and beyond.
Spanish and American Sign Language interpretation will be provided.
