Classrooms removed to make way for new school building to be completed during 2015–16 school year
When students leave for summer vacation, contractors get to work on building repairs and renovations. Of the many projects completed this summer, one of the most dramatic is at Howard Elementary School.
Students at Howard will soon have a new school building, funded by the school bond measure. The project architects are finalizing the final design details of the new building now, including modifying the initial design to reduce costs and make the best use of taxpayer dollars. The district will select a general contractor this fall to build the new school. In the meantime, a local contractor is preparing the site for construction to begin.
Classrooms 4 and 5 at the end of the east wing were demolished in August to make room for the new school to be built on the Howard property. Workers carried out the demolition carefully to salvage the sturdy roof joists for reuse. Visitors to Howard also will see a new gravel access road and a rock pad for the new building site to the southeast of the existing school.
Classes will continue in the 65-year-old original Howard school while the new school takes shape. Construction will begin this year and be completed during the 2015–16 school year. The new school will provide better learning environments for students and will cost less to operate. It’s all thanks to 4J voters who approved the 2013 school bond measure!
