On Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, we reflect on its significance in American history. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, announcing the end of slavery in the United States, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day stands as a powerful symbol of liberation, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality for all.

At Peninsula School District, we honor Juneteenth as a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black Americans to our nation. It is a day to reflect on our shared history, educate ourselves, and promote unity within our community.

We encourage all families to take time on Juneteenth to learn about its history and significance, and to participate in local events that commemorate this important day.
