Responsibilities

The Peninsula School District Board of Directors consists of five directors, elected by residents to govern the school district. The board works with the superintendent and district administrators to make decisions regarding:

• bond and levy elections
• budget adoptions
• facilities
• curriculum adoptions
• fiscal planning and oversight
• employee relations
• transportation, and more

They establish district policies according to federal, state, and local laws; the State Board of Education; and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

While the board is ultimately responsible for setting policy, it employs a professional staff of administrators to implement policies and manage the day-to-day functions in the district. The staff is led by the superintendent, who carries out the board’s vision and direction.

Qualifications

Candidates for school board must be:

• Citizen of the United States of America
• Legal resident of Washington State
• At least 18 years old by election day
• Registered to vote within the Peninsula School District attendance area
• Registered to vote within the director district they wish to represent

Neither a Board member nor his/her spouse or interdependent family members may be employed by the school district, except when the Board member’s spouse was employed by the district before the election or appointment to the Board.

Director Districts

Each board member in the Peninsula School District represents one of five geographic regions. It is a requirement that a Peninsula board member be registered to vote within the area they represent.

Commitment

Meetings
Board meetings are typically held the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., or later. The schedule is subject to change, most often during school breaks.

Participation
In additional to the regular Board meetings, members can expect to spend an average of 10 additional hours per week on study and participation in other functions, such as school visits, community meetings and graduation exercises. Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact a member of the current board of directors to ask what the experience is like and what is involved to receive direct information.

Term
School Board members are elected to a term of four years.

Vacancy
In case of a Board vacancy, the remaining Board members will appoint someone to fill the vacancy until the next regularly scheduled Board election, at which time a director will be elected for the unexpired term, if any. Applications for the vacancy will be posted on the district website. Interviews of candidates will take place during open public meetings.
