SPEECH LANGUAGE ASSISTANT

JOB SUMMARY:
This position conducts speech/language therapy activities with students under the direction of a certified speech/language therapist and travels between assigned elementary or secondary schools as necessary.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to Director of Student Services or designee; receives assigned caseload and lead direction from assigned speech/language therapist.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conducts therapy programs and activities for students, singly or in small groups that will assist the student in meeting objectives as directed by the speech/language therapist.
  2. Provides therapy support in classroom as appropriate.
  3. Relays information regarding students from staff to students.
  4. Travels between schools for therapy sessions; schedules time for direct therapy; plans travel times; checks in with building staff.
  5. Assists in planning programs for students; assembles materials needed for programs; prepares and updates schedules.
  6. Prepares speech/language therapy files; files district forms; completes paperwork under direction of the speech/language therapist.
  7. Contacts teachers, assistants, principals and others for consultation. Contacts parents as needed under the direction of the speech/language therapist.
  8. Records progress and attendance of students; updates plans.
  9. Attends departmental, building, and IEP meetings.
  10. Serves as a team member in designated regular education/special education classrooms.
  11. Constructs materials for students; modifies materials as necessary and as directed by the speech/language therapist.
  12. Attends to personal hygiene needs of students as needed; occasionally required to lift and carry students.
  13. Performs related duties as assigned.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Requires dexterity and precision; may be required to attend to students’ personal hygiene needs; occasionally required to lift and carry students; exposed to infectious diseases; required to travel between work sites.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience
High school graduation or equivalent required. BS or BA in speech/language pathology preferred. Experience working with speech preferred. Work experience with preschool, elementary and secondary special needs students preferred.

Speech Language Pathologist Assistant certification (SLP-A)
