Student Rights, Legal Notices, and Forms

This Guide contains information about the ways in which building staff and all building occupants can assist the District in maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy learning and working environment.

• A Guide to Building Care  

As part of the “No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2002” school districts are required to notify parents/guardians when schools their children attend have not made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two consecutive years.

In compliance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), a copy of the Peninsula School District’s Asbestos Management Plan is available in the main office of each district building. In addition, a master copy of the plan is available at the district Maintenance Office. Questions may be directed to the Maintenance Department, attention Patrick Gillespie, at 530-3801.

• Asbestos Notification Letter 

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.

FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children’s education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have transferred are “eligible students.”

Washington State law requires that the parent/guardian of students in grades 6-12 be provided with information about the causes, symptoms, and methods of prevention of meningococcal disease.

Washington State law requires that you be provided with information about human papillomavirus (HPV) disease and its vaccine.

• Required Notification about Meningococcal Disease and HPV Disease 

Principals will be notified directly by Pierce County if a Level 1 or Level 2 Offender moves within 100 feet of their school; however, in the event a Level 3 moves into the community the District will be notified. The most efficient method for families to remain aware of the registered offenders in our community is to access the Pierce County Sex Offender website:
