Students of all ages – from kindergarten to college to creative aging programs – benefit from artistic learning, innovative thinking, and creativity. MPMS PTO FUNDRAISERStudents brought home on Friday, September 2, five School Zone Fundraiser packs. The School Zone Pack is a program that will save everyone money! Each School Zone Pack contains both a Discount Card and a Coupon Sheet that is a collection of the most popular merchants in our local area.The customer receives two items when they purchase the package from the student. The first item is the COUPON SHEET; the second item is the DISCOUNT CARD. The person then may use the Discount Card over and over again, and then use the coupons to save even more money. Each student is responsible for returning the items not sold. Cost of School Zone package is $20.00. Students collect cash/check at time order is placed. Are You Interested in Being in the MPMS Band?Read this letter from our new band director, Keith GrushTo all incoming 6th grade students,Welcome to MPMS! You will be a very special class to me, as I am also new to MPMS. My name is Keith Grush and I am the new band director here after teaching band for fifteen years in other parts of NC. I am extremely excited to be here and am looking forward to working with many of you. On that topic, it is definitely not too late to sign up to be part of the Mt. Pleasant Band. The Band here has a rich tradition of success and I plan on embracing the tradition of excellence while combining that with my experiences in helping students discover their love for music while achieving great results.If you are at all interested in being in the band, 6th grade is by far the best time to check it out. I would love the opportunity to talk with you and your parents to see if there is an instrument that you would like to play and to look at the possibility of taking band this year. While many people love it and continue through middle school and high school, you are not committing to anything longer than this year. Tuesday, October 4, is Picture Day!!!We will be taking individual pictures of students for the yearbook on Tuesday, October 4. Students were given order forms offering a choice of packages to purchase. All students should have their picture made whether they are going to purchase or not. Upcoming Events!School Choice Program for High Schools
Eighth grade students attended an assembly on Thursday, October 13, in which they were introduced to the School Choice options they have for high school. Please talk with your child about what they learned. They also received a handout (Click Here for a Copy) as well. There is more information and videos about our Choices on the School Choice Website. October is Soc-tober Month!It's October and that means it's time for SOC-TOBER!!! Remember, Soctober is about bringing in new pairs of socks to be donated to the needy. Student Council will be collecting socks Monday, Oct 24th thru Thursday, the 27th. This is a grade level competition, so the 6th, 7th and 8th grade homerooms who collect the most pairs of new socks by Thursday, the 27th will receive a pizza party!!! Go Soc-tober!!!

MPMS Thanksgiving Service Project
Mt. Pleasant Tigers are participating in our 9th annual
Thanksgiving Service Project. The
students and staff at MPMS are putting together turkey dinners for families in
our community that are in need. The
dinners consist of a frozen turkey, trimmings, vegetables, drinks and
dessert. If you are able to donate a few
items for others in need, please choose items listed: stuffing boxes, canned
corn, gravy packets, non-perishable dessert (cake mix and icing), instant
mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, cranberry sauce, several packs of tea, green
beans, and candied
yams.If you are donating items, please have your child give the items to their homeroom teacher or you may drop off items at the school office. We will be filling 30 boxes of food. All items need to be turned in by Nov. 16th.

Softball Team Wins Tournament Championship!A big congratulations goes out to the softball team for bringing a conference tournament championship back to MPMS by beating Kannapolis 3-1! Coach Miller would like to say that she is so proud of each and every player and it is well deserved from all of the hard work you put into every practice and game. The team had a fantastic season and finished with a 9-4 record overall.

Beta Club Inducts 40 New MembersOn Thursday, October 6, the Mount Pleasant Middle School Beta Club inducted 40 new members. The Induction Ceremony honored the seventh and eighth grade students who had been invited to join the National Junior Beta Club. They received this honor by meeting the requirements of high academic excellence, good character and creditable service. To maintain membership in the National Junior Beta Club, students must have a 95 or higher cumulative average, be on gold level and participate in service projects thoughout the academic year. 8th Grade Marching Band
Congratulations
to the MP Band Marching Band and our five 8th grade students on their
excellent season!! The band ended with 3 Grand Champions, several 1st in
class, numerous 1st and 2nd place in areas of percussion, color guard,
Drum Major, marching, music, and
general effect. Our MPMS students participated in percussion, brass, and
colorguard. Congratulations on a great season!!!!!!

Mock Trial Team Goes to Competition!
Congratulations to the MPMS Mock Trial team. Since the start of school this year they have been preparing attorney questions and witness roles as well as meeting three times every week after school. They have put in hours of their own time outside of school and practice times. They performed very well at competition on November 4th. Fifty-six teams across the state competed for only 8 spots in state finals competition. MPMS was selected as an alternate for state level competition. This is a major accomplishment for a team only in its second year.
On competition day peer awards were given out for most effective witness and most effective attorney. These awards were decided on by each opposing team. The MPMS most effective attorney for both rounds of competition was Kelsey Hall. The MPMS most effective witnesses were Aidan Little and Vivian Padget. Mrs. McKinney also recognized Sawyer Austin as a most valuable participant to the team. He was always ready to practice, flexible and willing to take on any role necessary for team success.
Thank you to the 2016 MPMS Mock Trial team for a great competition performance: Sawyer Austin, Nadiya Berryman, Abby Bulger, Kristin Culp, Parker Fields, Kelsey Hall, Ayden Hooks, Aidan Little, Vivian Padget, Kaidyn Waggoner, and Reagan Waggoner.

Friends of the Mount Pleasant Library want to get the word to MPMS families about their annual play! This year the event is being held at MPMS and the following staff will be appearing in the plays: Tim Farrar, Kim Hoyle, Julie Stephenson, Melinda Helmintoller, Sharon Duncan, Gary Hahn, Erika Barrier, Amanda Linker, Britt Newsome, Marnie Stoker, Michael Teal, and Bradley Willis, along with substitute teachers Mindy Kluttz and Jill Baxter. Former staff members also have parts: Sam Treadaway, Becky Porter, Geri Clay, Dottie Eudy, Kim Harding, Glenda Gibson, and Phil Furr.

Beta Club Sponsoring Pennies for PatientsWe are excited at Mt Pleasant Middle to participate for the 13th year in a special service learning project called Pasta for Pennies. We have raised over $23,000 in those thirteen years. We will collect spare change in our classrooms from February 1 through March 2. We join the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in their mission for a cure for blood cancers – leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma. Did you know the leukemia takes the lives of more young people under 20 than any disease in our country? We are helping LLS find a cure and make ours a WORLD WITHOUT CANCER!We will emphasize character and service during this project: community awareness, compassion, caring and working together as a team to make a difference.

Each student has received the Cookie Caboodle Cookie Brochure containing selections of the most popular flavors of both Tubs and Pre-portioned Gourmet cookies. Place all orders on the back of the brochure and make sure student's first and last names with homeroom teacher are on the form. Collect money at the time of the order and turn in together. Checks should be made out to Mt. Pleasant Middle School. All orders and money are due back on March 2.

Spelling Bee WinnersCongratulations to Brandon P., Runner Up, and Adam E., Champion Speller, for winning the Mt. Pleasant Middle School Spelling Bee on Friday, December 16. There were twenty-one students from all three grade levels participating in the final round. Adam is an eighth grade student in Ms. Hauber's Venture from the Beach Bums team and Brandon is a seventh grader in Mrs. Childers's Venture from the Looney Tunes team. Adam represented our school at the county competition on January 11.

Honor Roll Recognition Program Congratulations to the students who made the A/AB Honor Roll for the 2nd nine weeks. To celebrate this honor the students and their parents were invited to attend an Honor Roll Celebration in the auditorium during the student's encore time.
The date of the program was February 3, 2017. The encore times were 6th Grade - 9:05, 7th grade – 12:00 and 8th grade – 2:00. After the honor roll celebration, we had a time for the parents to socialize with the students and celebrate with them in honor of this special time!

MPMS Soil and Water Speech Winners
The Soil and Water Speech Contest is a state sponsored educational opportunity open to 7th and 8th graders. This year students were asked to write a speech on the theme “Soil and Water…Yours for Life.” The students were asked to present their speeches using the state created rubric that judged them both on content and speaking skills. Elizabeth P. and Ashlynn K. were our final contestants. They then presented their speeches to our Science teachers again using the state created rubrics. The contest was very close but Elizabeth secured the finalist position represented MPMS at the County Level on February 9th.

TSA Winners at Regional CompetitionOn Friday, February 17th, the MPMS TSA Club traveled to Appalachian State University to compete in the regional competition. Winners were as follows: 7th grader Clay Newmyer placed 3rd in the Dragster, 8th grader Andre Jiang placed 2nd in Flight, 8th grader Dillon Pursell placed 1st in Flight, 7th grader Brendan Marshburn and 8th grader Andrew Jiang won 1st place in Tech Bowl, 6th grader Abby Isenhour and 8th grade Andrew Jiang came in 2nd in Medical Technology , 6th grader Abby Isenhour and 7th grader Max Lynch won 3rd place in Problem Solving and 6th grader Grace Potts placed 3rd in Promotions Marketing. Congratulations to these students and good luck at state competition!

Jakob Craver Wins Gold in App Cup SnowboardingCongratulations to Jakob Craver, a 7th grade student in Mr. Hahn's homeroom, for winning the gold in the overall point standing in the App Cup snowboarding competition this past weekend. He is a member of the Mt. Pleasant snowboard team and has been racing in the USASA boarder cross events. This is a national series that is the "big show" for skiing and snowboarding. He has been doing really well and has qualified for the national event which takes place on April 4th. This is a huge competition with tons of nationally ranked competitors. Even Olympian hopefuls are in it, so it is a great chance to see "what he's got". Good Luck Jakob!!!

MPMS Stagecrafters Participated in the NC Theatre Conference Festival
On Saturday, March 18, the MPMS Stagecrafters participated in the North Carolina Theatre Conference Middle School Play Festival at Spirit Square in Charlotte, NC. At the NCTC Middle School Play Festival, schools from all across the state come together to share their talents and celebrate their collective achievements. Following their performance, students received verbal and written feedback from industry experts. When not performing, students watched performances from other schools, learned from their peers and made new theatre friends. The MPMS Stagecrafters received the "Excellence in Movement" Award for their play production of "School Daze" and they received the "Festival Spirit" Award. We are so proud of our theatre students!

Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office Summer Camps for KidsRising 6th - 8th grade students are invited to participate in the annual summer camp sponsored by the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office Youth Development Division.
Camp Dates and Location:Week 1: June 19-23 at Mt. Pleasant Middle School, 8325 Hwy. 49 N, Mt. PleasantWeek 2: June 26-30 at Hickory Ridge High School, 7321 Raging Ridge Rd, HarrisburgCamp activities will include Lessons and Presentations on topics such as: Cyber Safety, Communication Skills, Safety Education, and many more. The lessons will be led by Deputies from the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office. All are current School Resource Officers and work with children on a daily basis. Activities will also include games, field trips, group activities, safety lessons, and much more.Cost for Camp: $40.00 (fee covers activity costs)Snacks will be provided at no cost to camp participants. Each participant must provide their own bag lunch.The camp will be limited to 40 participants. The spaces will be filled by the first 40 to return the camp registration. YCI Members, Sponsor, and Club Gets RecognitionTwo students were nominated for their Christian faith, leadership, obedience and character at the 2017 Youth Commission Eagle Awards on Friday, April 28th. Congratulations to eighth grader, Nikki Stephenson and seventh grader, Brennen Jones for this honorable achievement. MPMS’s YCI club was nominated for club of the year and Mrs. Deanna Jones was nominated for teacher of the year.
