2021–22 4J staff retirements
Join us in honoring Eugene School District 4J’s 2022 retirees! Though we are sad to say goodbye to these amazing 4J staff, we are happy they soon will have more time for family, friends and adventures.
We would like to thank our 65 retirees for their hard work through the years. There are few careers that have as great an impact on our world as those involved in the care and education of our young people.

Manuel Allen
Most recent position: Custodian at South Eugene High School
Manuel Allen is retiring after a 26-year career with 4J. He started as a substitute custodian at Jefferson Middle School (where Arts & Technology Academy is located now) before moving to South Eugene High School on a full-time basis. He also held a second full-time job at the Eugene Hilton. Manuel said he’ll most miss the friendships he developed over the years. His retirement plans include continuing his education, noting, “You never get too old to learn.” Congratulations, Manuel!
Lori Arnold
Most recent position: Vocational training assistant for 4J’s Connections Transition Program
Lori Arnold is retiring after working for 4J for more than 20 years. She worked as a substitute for a few years in the 1980s before returning to the district on a permanent basis in 2004. She dedicated her career in 4J teaching special education students up to the age of 21 job skills that they can draw upon after school. Lori will miss the joy she sees in her students as they discover their many amazing abilities. She plans to visit her grandchildren, spend time at the coast and downsize her Eugene-area farm during retirement. Congratulations, Lori!
Ronald Bell
Most recent position: Warehouse supervisor at the 4J Education Center
Ronald Bell is retiring after spending more than 20 years with 4J, most recently supervising the district’s central office warehouse. He will miss his co-workers the most and noted the greatest pleasure of his job was helping make sure students were fed at school. His goal in retirement is to travel. Congratulations, Ron!
Vern Cedarlund
Most recent position: Math teacher at Sheldon High School
Vern Cedarlund is retiring after a 34-year career in public education, which included stints at Kelly Middle School and Sheldon High School. He will miss his students’ optimism as well as the vibrancy and potential for creativity in the teaching profession. His plans in retirement include biking along the Danube River in Europe, living for a time in Portugal and teaching part-time. Congratulations, Vern!
Michelle Crowson
Most recent position: Special needs bus driver for 4J’s Transportation Department
Michelle Crowson has retired after working for two decades for 4J. She will most miss the students. She plans to camp and spend time with her children and grandchildren during her retirement. Congratulations, Michelle!
Ronald Daniels
Most recent position: Bus driver for 4J’s Transportation Department
Ronald Daniels is retiring after driving a school bus for 4J for 10 years. He will most miss the students he drove and his co-workers. His plans for retirement are spending more time woodworking, fishing and crabbing, beekeeping, and puttering around his home. Congratulations, Ronald!
Arleigh Dhonau
Most recent position: Special ed educational assistant at Madison Middle School
Arleigh Dhonau has retired after working 17 years for 4J. She started working for the district in 2005 in the comprehensive learning center at Gilham Elementary School. She will miss working side-by-side with her colleagues at Madison, which she described as a home away from home. Retirement for Arleigh doesn’t necessarily mean not working, and she plan to take up creative pursuits and other projects that will nourish her soul. Congratulations, Arleigh!
Laurie Fierling
Most recent position: School secretary at North Eugene High School
Laurie Fierling is retiring after a 30-year career in education as a classified employee. She started with 4J in 1999 as a health clerk at North Eugene. Laurie looks forward to spending time with her husband and grandson, but she will miss the relationships she developed her staff and students. Congratulations, Laurie!
Chad Helfrich
Most recent position: Custodian/maintenance coordinator II at Kennedy Middle School
Chad Helfrich has retired after working for 30 years at 4J. He started as a substitute custodian in November 1990 before being hired full-time as an evening custodian at Kennedy Middle School six months later. In 1998, he moved to the old Harris Elementary School to become head custodian. He returned to Kennedy as head custodian in 2008 and stayed there until his retirement this December. He will miss most of his friends in 4J’s custodial department as well as the great staff at Kennedy. He plans to spend his retirement making furniture, golfing and enjoying life with family and friends. Congratulations, Chad!
Darin Henry
Most recent position: Campus monitor at Sheldon High School
Darin Henry has retired after a 26-year career in public education, working a year as a campus supervisor at Churchill High School before moving to Sheldon and staying there for a quarter-century. He plans to spend more time gardening and surfing. While he’ll miss greeting students daily, he’s committed to saying hello to folks he runs across daily during his retirement. Congratulations, Darin!
Mary Hochberg
Most recent position: Help desk specialist in 4J’s Technology Department.
Mary Hochberg has retired after working more than 20 years in public education, including 14 at 4J. She will most miss the good people she worked with. Her retirement plans are simple: having fun! Congratulations, Mary!
Margaret Jones
Most recent position: Title I teacher at Family School
Margaret Jones is retiring after working for 4J for 17 years. She worked as a teacher at Adams, Edgewood and Holt elementary schools before moving to Family School. In retirement, Margaret looks forward to taking life in at a slower pace. Congratulations, Margaret!
Karen Kingzett
Most recent position: School secretary at Roosevelt Middle School
Karen Kingzett is retiring after working 21 years in public education. Before working at 4J, she was a high school language arts teacher for two years at the same school in Roswell, N.M., where she graduated from a few years earlier. She started at 4J as the registrar at Roosevelt Middle School and ended her tenure as the middle school’s secretary. She will most miss helping students and staff and the busy pace of the job. Her retirement plans include moving closer to where her first grandchild lives, traveling and volunteering Congratulations, Karen!
Karen Kline
Most recent position: Occupational therapist for 4J’s Student Services Department
Karen Kline is retiring after a long career with 4J. She started work as an occupational therapist for the district in 1993, support students with physical disabilities at the former Westmoreland Elementary School. During her career, she supported students, staff and families at more than 20 Eugene-area schools in addition 10 schools in six Lane County school districts that contract with 4J for occupational therapy services. She will miss the thrill of a student discovering how to do tasks they need to do to be more independent in the classroom, the bond shared among her team, and the collaboration with her other co-workers. In retirement, Karen plans to travel, play the marimba and mbira, and give back to the community as a volunteer. Congratulations, Karen!
Michelle Lampe
Most recent position: Physical education teacher at Yujin Gakuen Japanese Immersion Elementary School
Michelle Lampe is retiring after 30 years in public education, including 16 years working for 4J. She has taught physical education at Gilham and Yujin Gakuen elementary schools and Sheldon High School. She will most miss her daily interactions with students. During retirement, Michelle plans to substitute teach and spend a lot of time in Arizona and Mexico. Congratulations, Michelle!
Ron Lampe
Most recent position: Physical education teacher at Sheldon High School
Ron Lampe is retiring from 4J after 16 years teaching physical education at Sheldon High School. He also coached baseball and basketball when he started working at the high school. Before moving to 4J, Ron taught for 20 years at Creswell Middle School. He will most miss the students and his peers at Sheldon. While retiring from 4J, Ron isn’t done teaching. He and his wife are moving to Arizona, where he accepted a job as a middle school math teacher. Congratulations, Ron!
Tammi May
Most recent position: Finance clerk at North Eugene High School
Tammi May has retired after working two decades with 4J. She previously worked for the district as a BEST after-school program coordinator at Kelly Middle School and a scheduler for elementary and middle schools. She’ll miss the daily interactions with her 4J colleagues and many learning opportunities she’s been given while employed with the district. Her immediate retirement plans include watching her grandchildren and helping out her father. Congratulations, Tammy!
Nanci McChesney
Most recent position: Physical education teacher at Sheldon High School
Nanci McChesney has retired after a 31-year career in education, including working 25 years at Sheldon High School teaching physical education and dance. Nanci said she will miss students’ excitement about learning new things and her daily interactions with colleagues. In retirement, she plans to simplify her life, stay in the present moment and have fun creating and recreating. Congratulations, Nanci!
Garry McCready
Most recent position: Information Systems Manager, Technology Department
Garry McCready has retired after working 26 years for 4J, starting in 1995 as a student services software specialist and working his way up to information systems manager. He will miss most the kind, helpful and appreciative people he worked with, including staff from other Oregon school districts and the creativity and the sense of accomplishment when programming, troubleshooting and finding useful solutions with his team. His immediate retirement plans including helping his father publish a book of his poems, officiating track meets at the new Hayward Field and learning to play the hammered dulcimer, a percussion-stringed instrument. Congratulations, Garry!
Kelly McGhehey
Most recent position: Counselor at ECCO High School
Kelly McGhehey is retiring after 30 years in public education, including, 24 years working for 4J. She spent 19 years at North Eugene High School and the last five years working as a counselor at ECCO. During retirement, Kelly plans to garden, volunteer, travel and visit her children. And what will she miss most about working with 4J students? “Watching teenagers figure out how awesome and brilliant they are and decide where their talents and passions will lead them.” Congratulations, Kelly!
Lance Miller
Most recent position: Chemistry and physics teacher at Churchill High School
Lance Miller is retiring after teaching off and on and at various levels since 1982. He joined 4J in 2005 after securing an emergency teaching license to fulfill a need in science. Lance will miss all the energy he received from Churchill students the most as they kept him going (and laughing) throughout his career. During retirement, he will continue volunteer work around the Eugene-Springfield area, expand his role in emergency communications, and focus on his amateur radio hobby in his spare time.

Nancy Neishleb
Most recent position: Food service coordinator II at Arts & Technology Academy
Nancy Neishleb has retired after working 15 years as a food service coordinator for 4J. She will most miss making breakfast for students and providing them not only a good meal but a friendly smile and positive words of encouragement to start each day. Nancy doesn’t have any big plans for the early days of her retirement and is content to wait for inspiration to strike. Congratulations, Nancy!
Jennifer Nygren
Most recent position: Special ed educational assistant at Kennedy Middle School
Jennifer Nygren is retiring after a 26-year career with 4J. She started with the district as a special ed educational assistant at Churchill High School and retires after working down the road at Kennedy Middle School in the same position. Jennifer will miss her students but looks forward to traveling and spending a lot of time with her grandchildren during retirement. Congratulations, Jennifer!
Karen Olsen
Most recent position: Fifth grade teacher at McCornack Elementary School
Karen Olsen is retiring after a 41-year-career in education, including 37 years at 4J. She started with the district in 1981 as a resident teacher and was officially hired on at 4J in 1985. She will miss her students’ smiles and enthusiasm to learn. During retirement, Karen will continue to direct musicals and organize annual group theater trips to New York through her nonprofit organization. She’ll remain actively involved with the Lane County Historical Museum. Congratulations, Karen!
Michael Riplinger
Most recent position: Principal at Camas Ridge Elementary School
Michael Riplinger is retiring after a 39-year career in education. He first job as an educational professional was as a special ed educational assistant at Cal Young Middle School in 1983. Michael said he will most miss being around students and “their awesome excitement.” In retirement, he will chase around his kids and their adventures. Congratulations, Michael!
David Robinson
Most recent position: Plumbing specialist for 4J’s Facilities Department
David Robinson is retiring after a 35-year career with 4J. His first job was insulating steam lines and boilers after asbestos removal. He has worked as a plumber for the last two decades. David will miss everything about his job (okay, not the plugged drains). His retirement plans include traveling around the West Coast, relaxing at home with his wife and attending car shows with one of his three vintage cars. Congratulations, David!
Maria T. Schaad
Most recent position: Spanish teacher at Churchill High School
Maria T. Schaad is retiring from 4J after 18 years of service. Her first job was as an educational assistant at Jefferson Middle School (now Arts & Technology Academy). She’ll retire as a Spanish teacher at Churchill High School. She will most miss her students as she loved the daily interactions in the classroom and helping students learn and love a second language. She will continue to work as a substitute teacher and mental health therapist. She plans to travel to her home country of Ecuador and visit family in Columbia and the Dominican Republic. Congratulations, Maria!
Mitzi Shirk
Most recent position: Second grade teacher at Edgewood Elementary School
Mitzi Shirk is retiring after teaching at 4J for 21 years. She spent her first five years with the district teaching kindergarten at Edgewood Elementary School before moving to teach second grade at the school. She will most miss the children who brought joy and laughter—and even a few tears—to her life, her co-workers and the opportunity to work in career she loved. In retirement, Mitzi plans to spend time gardening, reading and visiting family members both here in Eugene and in her home state of Minnesota. Congratulations, Mitzi!
Carol Standefer
Most recent position: Chemistry teacher at Sheldon High School
Carol Standefer is retiring after working 20 years in her second career as a chemistry teacher at Sheldon High School. She will most miss the students and her co-workers. Her retirement plans include traveling in April or October rather than during spring or summer break, spending more time with her kids, volunteering as a court-appointed special advocate and fostering kittens. Congratulations, Carol!
Jeffrey Stimler
Most recent position: Kindergarten teacher at Holt Elementary School
Jeffrey Stimer is retiring from public education, both as a substitute and full-time teacher, after 26 years. He taught middle school math and science before taking a long-term assignment at Holt Elementary School, first as a first-grade teacher and most recently teaching kindergartners. He’ll most miss the wonder and excitement he sees in the faces of his students — and even being called mom accidentally by a student. In retirement, he looks forward to spending time with his family and on photography, with plans to always be on an adventure and never slow down. Congratulations, Jeffrey!
Kumiko Vanderbush
Most recent position: Second grade teacher at Yujin Gakuen Japanese Immersion Elementary School
Kumiko Vanderbush has retired after spending 28 years teaching second graders at Yujin Gakuen Japanese Immersion Elementary School. Congratulations, Kumiko!
Carolyn Webb
Most recent position: Nutrition services regional manager
Carolyn Webb is retiring after working for 4J for more than 22 years. She started as a food service assistant at Spencer Butte for one year then was promoted to kitchen coordinator at Monroe Middle School, a position she held for 19 years, before moving into her current job. Carolyn will miss all of the cooks, office staff and students. In retirement, she plans to build her business, travel with her husband in their RV and work on a lot of projects around her home. Congratulations, Carolyn!
Delia Wenrich
Most recent position: Health teacher at Sheldon High School
Delia Wenrich is retiring after 38 years as a public school teacher, including three decades with 4J. She began her career in the Greater Albany School District before moving to 4J in 1992 after her second child was born. She taught numerous health and child development classes at all four comprehensive high schools, ending her career at Sheldon where she’s spent the last 11 years. She will most miss the special relationships she’s developed with her students, staff and even guest speakers. She looks forward to relaxing and enjoying life at a slower pace, spending more time with her husband, once he retires, and visiting her three daughters and two grandchildren. Congratulations, Delia!
Nicole Wilson
Most recent position: Third grade teacher for the K–5 Connect online education program
Nicole Wilson is retiring after working for 4J for 25 years. Her job with the district back in 1996 was as a resource room teacher at Crest Drive Elementary School. Wilson will miss teaching and building relationships with her students and colleagues. In retirement, she plans spending more time with her family, improving her health and traveling. Congratulations, Nicole!

Arleigh Dhonau

Arleigh Dhonau se jubiló después de trabajar 17 años para 4J. Comenzó a trabajar para el distrito en 2005 en el centro de aprendizaje integral de la Escuela Primaria Gilham. En Madison, trabajó en un proyecto donde los estudiantes de educación especial podían aprender con sus compañeros en un salón de clases general. Echará de menos trabajar codo con codo con sus colegas en Madison, que describió como un hogar lejos del hogar. Laurie Fierling

Chad Helfrich
Puesto más reciente: Conserje/coordinador de mantenimiento II en la Secundaria Kennedy
Chad Helfrich se jubiló después de trabajar durante 30 años en 4J. Comenzó como conserje suplente en noviembre de 1990 antes de ser contratado a tiempo completo como conserje nocturno en la Secundaria Kennedy seis meses después. En 1998, se mudó a la antigua Escuela Primaria Harris para convertirse en el conserje principal. Regresó a Kennedy como conserje principal en el 2008 y permaneció allí hasta su jubilación, que será en diciembre. Karen Kingzett se jubila después de trabajar 21 años en la educación pública. Antes de trabajar en 4J, fue maestra de artes del lenguaje en la Preparatoria durante dos años en la misma escuela en Roswell, NM, de donde se graduó unos años antes. Comenzó en 4J como registradora en la Secundaria Roosevelt y terminó su cargo como secretaria de esa secundaria. Lo que más extrañará será ayudar a los estudiantes y al personal y el ritmo ajetreado del trabajo. Sus planes de jubilación incluyen mudarse más cerca de donde vive su primer nieto, viajar y ser voluntaria. ¡Felicitaciones, Karen!

Karen Kline se jubila después de una larga carrera en el 4J. Comenzó a trabajar como terapeuta ocupacional para el distrito en 1993, apoyando a estudiantes con discapacidades físicas en la antigua Escuela Primaria Westmoreland. Durante su carrera, apoyó a estudiantes, personal y familias en más de 20 escuelas del área de Eugene, además de 10 escuelas en seis distritos escolares del condado de Lane que tienen contrato con 4J para servicios de terapia ocupacional. Echará de menos la emoción de un estudiante que descubre cómo hacer las tareas que necesita para ser más independiente en el aula, el vínculo compartido entre su equipo y la colaboración con sus otros compañeros de trabajo.
