Mr. Christopher D. Morgan
Chris Morgan has been an Assistant Band Director for the Biloxi Public Schools since 2016 in a variety of different roles within the award-winning band department. Currently, Mr. Morgan teaches Beginner Brass classes at the Biloxi Upper Elementary and 7th Grade Brass at Biloxi Junior High. At Biloxi High School, he conducts the Jazz Band and assists with the Marching Band and Wind Ensemble. Prior to joining Biloxi, he worked with Ocean Springs Bands (2007-2016) as Head Band Director of the Middle School and Upper Elementary Bands.
Mr. Morgan is a two-time recipient of the Gulf Coast Band Directors Association Middle School Band Director of the Year Award in both 2011 and 2016. In 2014 and 2021, he was recognized by the Mississippi Economic Council as S.T.A.R Teacher of the Year in both Ocean Springs School District and Biloxi Public Schools, respectively. He is also a member of the American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA), the National Band Association (NBA), the Mississippi Band Directors Association (MBA), and currently serves as Treasurer of the Gulf Coast Band Directors Association (GCBDA).
With the Biloxi Band, Mr. Morgan has grown the Jazz Band into an award-winning ensemble and one of BHS's premier performing groups. The BHS Jazz Band has received the honor of Most Outstanding Band at the William Carey Jazz Festival in 2022 and 2023. The BHS Symphonic Band regularly received Excellent and Superior ratings under his baton. This year, Mr. Morgan is very excited to reconnect with and mentor Biloxi Band's 6th grade band students.
Mr. Morgan was born and raised in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, a small suburb of Philadelphia. He was an active student leader in his high school band and won auditions into the Pennsylvania All-State Jazz Band in 1997 and 1998. He also received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award/Scholarship. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from James Madison University where he studied trumpet with James Kluesner, music education with MS Gulf Coast native Dr. J. Patrick Rooney, and jazz studies with Charles Dotas. Mr. Morgan also holds a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Minnesota under the tutelage of Dr. David Baldwin and Dean Sorenson.
Mr. Morgan is an active performer of all styles of music around the Gulf Coast. In 2003, he was lead trumpet aboard the Carnival MS Fantasy. He has performed with the Mobile Symphony Orchestra and the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra and serves as a soloist/lead trumpet with the Coast Big Band. He also performs regularly with Caution Swing Bridge, a jazz quintet made up of Gulf Coast locals. He can be found every Sunday morning performing downtown for First Baptist Church in Ocean Springs. Mr. Morgan currently resides in Ocean Springs with his wife, Susie; their children, Thomas and Lillian; and their dogs, Maxwell and Stella.
