Working...
School is ending and summer vacation is fast approaching. Many students’ reading habits change drastically when the last bell of the last day of school rings. Many will not read or write until they come back to school in the fall. As a reading teacher, this concerns me. Please be aware that reading over the summer doesn’t mean sitting down with a huge chapter book, or writing reports about what you read, or even reading a book in the house.
Reading takes place everyday everywhere. If reading a chapter book isn’t what the student wants to do, then so be it. Here are a few unconventional ways that the students could read/write everyday:
*Read the directions on how to play a game
*Read the instructions to parents while cooking.
*Write out the grocery list for the household.
*Create a summer book including stories about events to which he/she went.
*Create a new game. writing out the directions.
*Make a crossword or word search puzzle using words from nature.
*Create a song that goes along with the birds chirping.
*Create a scrapbook of summer fun with pictures and then write captions for each picture.
Summertime is the time to be creative. Enjoy the outdoors and family with reading as an added bonus.
