The sixth grade students have started reading Old Yeller, written by Fred Gipson. This book is a great tool when studying similes, metaphors, and idioms. The students have been recording these types of figurative language in their reading notebooks. Daily the students have had the opportunity to independent read as well. While the student is reading their choice of material they are looking for similes, metaphors, and idioms. At the end of class, the students are given the opportunity to share their findings with the group. The students have a ton of fun sharing their findings with their peers!
The seventh grade students have been reading Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, written by Mildred D. Taylor. This book provides the students with information about segregation and racism. The way the story is told, the students are exposed to how African American people were treated during the time after the Civil War. The many different issues brought up within the book allow us to have some very meaningful and educational conversations.
If you haven't read a good book lately, I hope that you venture out to the nearest library and snag one up. Reading is the door to freedom of imagination. It can be a wonderful escape from reality or a non-judging support system. Happy Reading!
