Balanced Calendar

What is a "balanced calendar?"

  • The traditional school calendar includes 180 days with a typical start date in early September, a two-week break in late December, a one-week spring break, and an end date in early to mid June allowing for a 10 week summer break.  Other school calendar models include distributing 180 days differently throughout the year, sometimes referred to as a "balanced calendar."

Rethinking the Bremerton School District calendar

  • The District and the Bremerton School Board wanted to reflect with our community on how we are best supporting student success related to the school calendar. We want to ensure our school calendar is reflective of the needs of our community and gather input on how we can best meet those needs.

In October 2021, the District invited teachers and staff, parents, families, community members, community partners and students to participate in a "ThoughtExchange" survey. The responses to that ThoughtExchange survey are shown below, with more detailed reports by category of respondents are on the right.

    What's next?

The District is not planning to move to a balanced calendar for the upcoming school year, but we will continue to look at how we structure learning and our academic calendar and school start times.

We will continue to share information as we continue looking at the academic calendar, and seek input from all stakeholders. Thank you to all who participated in our ThoughtExchange!
