Footprints on the Moon
"Footprints on the Moon" is our FAB 5 theme song for 2021-22. Each year, I choose a class song to help motivate students and add some FABULOUS FUN to our fifth-grade classroom. I chose this year's song late in the summer when I heard it on the radio the first time. At that time, I had no idea that the song was written and sung by Gabby Barrett who performed at the Putnam County Fair this year. When I researched the song, read the lyrics, and watched the music video, I knew this was the perfect song for this class of FABULOUS fifth-graders.
"Footprints on the Moon" embodies many of the characteristics that I try to nurture in my students every year. The song is a perfect example of a growth mindset, grit, and taking risks. It encourages perseverance and determination and following your dreams even when others tell you that the dream you seek is impossible.
In addition to our class song, students are learning to use a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset. A growth mindset focuses on what is possible and uses "mistakes" or "failure" as learning to grow and achieve. YET is a keyword in a growth mindset. For example, when facing a challenge, someone with a fixed mindset will say, "I can't do this." In contrast, someone with a growth mindset will say, "I can't do this YET.' Given enough time, the right "instruction", and enough effort, anything can be accomplished.
So the next time you are faced with a challenge and you feel that it is impossible, think about our class song: "You can do anything, ANYTHING you want to. There are footprints on the moon."
