Students and staff at Alexander Rose Elementary School in Milpitas celebrated the completion of their Winter STEAM Exploratory Block by showcasing a variety of student artwork, photos, videos, and two live performances during a daytime and evening event on December 15.
“It gives the kids a chance to show off what they’ve done and what they’re learning,” said instructional coach Jenny Katzen, curator of the showcase. “It’s really cool to see kids excited about things they usually wouldn’t be able to do at school.” Among the many class options this semester were the science of chocolate chip cookies, 3-D drawing and printing, bridge design, book writing and illustrating, think tank trainees, Hamilton, and weather. During the event, students who attended weather, for example, displayed weather instruments such as thermometers, anemometers, and cloud classifications. Showcase attendees had the chance to see journals with evidence of work along with pictures. Students enrolled in Hamilton dazzled attendees with a live Rose Broadway spectacular during two shows. “We’ve been really working on student-driven learning,” Principal Nanci Pass said about the importance of the multi-grade STEAM program, now in its second year. She explained there are many benefits to the program, where students meet once a week in an elective STEAM class throughout the semester. Among them, student engagement is increasing while behavioral issues are decreasing. Nanci explained the answer for this is simple: Because students have options for the elective, “they want to be a part of the class.” These benefits have been noteworthy beyond the school community, with other community members recognizing the work. The Milpitas Rotary Club raised $10,000 for the program at a sold-out fundraiser in September. The Milpitas Unified School District notifies the community of its intent to apply for funding under the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program (CCLC). The purpose of the funding is to provide opportunities for communities to establish or expand activities that focus on improved academic achievement, enrichment services that reinforce and complement the academic program, and family literacy and related educational development services. MUSD’s application represents three of our elementary schools; Randall Elementary, Rose Elementary, and Weller Elementary, who meet the funding eligibility requirements.
If awarded funding, MUSD will disseminate information about the 21st CCLC program in a manner that clearly states our goals with information posted on our website and announced through local news resources. We invite comments and partnerships as we work to improve the services offered to our students through quality expanded learning programs. This announcement serves as public notice of our intent to apply. The Milpitas Unified School District notifies the community of its intent to apply for funding under the 21st Century After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens program (ASSETs). The purpose of the funding is to create incentives for establishing locally driven after-school enrichment programs for high school students in the hours after the regular school day, and support college and career readiness. MUSD’s application represents our local continuation high school, Calaveras Hills High School, which meets the funding eligibility requirements.

Milpitas Unified will dish out district highlights at Sunnyhills’ community breakfast in January12/6/2016
New leaders in Milpitas Unified School District will meet with residents and share highlights about their sites during a free community breakfast co-sponsored by the Sunnyhills Neighborhood Association and Sunnyhills United Methodist Church on January 7.
Presenters will include Superintendent Cheryl Jordan; Norma Rodriguez, Assistant Superintendent of Learning and Development; Milpitas High Principal Phil Morales; Weller Elementary Principal Alicia Padilla; and Gerry Lopez, Coordinator of Early Childhood Development and Family Engagement -- all new in their roles serving Milpitas. "Schools are the backbone of our community,” said Allysson McDonald, president of the Sunnyhills Neighborhood Association. “With the personnel changes in MUSD during the last six months, we wanted to provide an opportunity for community members to meet some of the new staff, hear about their goals and strategies going forward, and find out how the community can partner with them to ensure that our schools are the best." Jordan said this opportunity for discussion is important particularly because Milpitas High School, Weller Elementary School, and the Sunnyhills Child Development Center all serve the Sunnyhills neighborhood. “It’s an opportunity to meet us and hear how each of us is working with our school community to build a ‘Culture of We,’” she said. “The ‘Culture of We’ is a focus to show the rest of the world how a dynamic, diverse community of people from all backgrounds, speaking about 50 different languages, can live together in a way that we respect what one another has to say, we value and celebrate one another’s cultures, and we are always here for each other.” The breakfast will run from 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday, January 7 at Jones Hall in Sunnyhills United Methodist Church, 355 Dixon Road, Milpitas. The Trades Orientation Program is now accepting applications for 2017 classes.
​ To reserve a spot for orientation, register at www.wpusa.org/top or contact 408-809-2131 no later than Dec. 11th. There is no cost to students for this nationally certificated, 130-hour career training program. Participants will learn what it takes to successfully apply to become a working apprentice in the trade of their choice, such as Carpenter, Electrician, HVACR Tech, Roofer, Pipefitter, Plasterer, Ironworker, Sheet Metal, and more. Applications will be accepted from Dec. 12th through Dec. 14th. Applications must be completed in person at an orientation session. See flyer below for details.  The 12 th Milpitas High School Hall of Fame dinner will be held on Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Milpitas Community Center. Nominations are now open for the 2016 -2017 Hall of Fame inductees. Feel free to nominate a person who meets the following criteria. (Nominations will be open until Friday January 6, 2017.) Alumni (Include supporting evidence where applicable) ❑ Must have attended Milpitas High or Samuel Ayer for a minimum of two years. ❑ Graduated at least 5 years ago. ❑ Had a positive impact on students, faculty, and or community while attending Samuel Ayer or Milpitas High. ❑ Has been a respected contributor to school and/or community after graduation from Samuel Ayer or Milpitas High. Classified Employee/Certificated Employee/Administrator (Include supporting evidence where applicable) ❑ Has at least 10 years of service in the district. (Majority of service at Milpitas High or Samuel Ayer.) ❑ Is retired or no longer full-time employee in the district for at least 1 year. ❑ Was outstanding as a classroom teacher/classified employee/administrator. ❑ Always dedicated to the job, loyal to the school site and district (goes above and beyond). ❑ Acted as a leader and a mentor. ❑ Made significant contributions to school and/or community. ❑ Maintained high standards of personal integrity and ethical behavior. ❑ Has respect of community, colleagues, and students.
