What is the Survey for?
The California Department of Education requires that we administer the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) to students in grades 5, 7, 9, 11 and to all students in the alternative high schools.
The survey will:
The survey is anonymous. No names are recorded or attached to the survey forms or data. Students who participate only have to answer the questions they want to answer and they may stop taking it at any time. The results will be made available for analysis only under strict confidentiality controls.
The survey will:
- Help promote better health among our youth and combat problems such as drug abuse and violence
- Gather information on behaviors such as physical activity and nutritional habits; alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use; school safety; and environmental and individual strengths and assets.
- Also include questions regarding your child's school environment.
- Assess parent and staff perceptions of student to school connectedness

Does my student have to take it?
- Students do not have to take the survey.
- Parents/guardians of middle and high school grade students must notify the school if they do not want their child to participate.
- Parents/guardians of 5th graders need to grant positive permission for student participation.

2019-2020 Results
The results from the fall 2019 administration of the CalSCHLS survey are in. The district had 60%, 83% and 80% completion rates for elementary, middle and high school students respectively. Specific results from the parent, staff, and student surveys are currently being evaluated to inform district practice as we strive to continue providing a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students.
