Overview
The 2023 Summer Academy is a five-week academic summer program for current TK-12th grade students (grade in the Fall of 2022). In alignment with MUSD's Strategic Goals:
*Students invited to summer school will receive a letter and registration information from the District Office.
- Develop educational pathways that allow students to apply their passion for learning for their future careers.
- Focus services and support systems to ensure that all students are engaged in their learning and are making social, emotional, and academic gains.

Elementary School Programs

TK-3rd Love for literacy & Steam
TK - 3rd Love for Literacy and STEAM will prioritize foundational skills through structured literacy guided by the Science of Reading research. Students will engage in a hands-on learning approach that promotes the developmental and reinforcement of asking questions/defining problems, collecting and interpreting data, logical thinking, and demonstrating the ability to present and critique arguments/conclusions.

TWO WAY BILINGUAL IMMERSION SUMMER PROGRAM OR TWBI (RANDALL STUDENTS)
The TWBI Summer program aims to help support Spanish fluency for students who need to develop different language skills as bilingual students. In addition, the program supports and develops additional, and often missing, base skills for students who attend Randall's unique dual-language program. The emphasis is on early literacy and foundational skill development for Spanish language learners or those whose native language is Spanish but needs additional support.
K-6TH SPECIAL EDUCATION EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR (ESY)
The Extended School Year (ESY) Summer Program is for students with exceptional needs who are at risk for regression and recoupment in the following areas: academic, communication, social-emotional functioning, or other skills identified on a student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). The IEP team will determine and identify students that are eligible for ESY services. ELA and Math instructional blocks are prioritized during the summer ESY program, which will occur in tandem with a range of fun and engaging learning activities throughout the summer. All instruction and learning activities are provided by special education teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers through both individual and small-group activities. Related service providers will provide speech therapy, occupational therapy, and counseling in alignment with the student's Individualized Education Program, which specifies the related service levels per student.

Elementary (Grades 4 - 6) and Middle School Programs

7th-8th project based learning
4th-8th Project-Based Learning Emphasizes high achievement through active learning, character growth, and teamwork. For five weeks, students in grades 4-8 will have the opportunity to engage in real-world projects, adventures, and services that enable students to meet high academic standards and become more engaged in their learning. Project-based learning focusing on ELA or Math is designed to accelerate student learning and engage them by leveraging standards-aligned lessons that will honor their backgrounds and foster collaborative, respectful group work. Individual lessons build toward an interdisciplinary problem-based performance task that allows students to integrate their learning, strengthen academic skills and engage with complex text and tasks.

TK-8th newcomer
The Newcomer Program is intended for students who have enrolled and attended school in the United States for 12 months or less. With the use of Vista Higher Learning as our curriculum, this course is designed to support our linguistically and culturally diverse learners, leveraging the assets they bring into the classroom and addressing social and academic language needs.

4th-8th Summit extended learning (Pomeroy, weller, and russell students)
The Summit Learning platform is designed to allow students to continue working on their courses even after the last day of school. Participating students will have additional time to work towards completing their course by taking diagnostic assessments and requesting content assessments. Student grades will update on the platform to reflect progress.

SUMMER BRIDGE
The Bridge Program is intended for incoming 9th graders who may have struggled during their 8th grade year for various reasons. With an ELA module from Project Based Learning (PBL), this course is designed to accelerate student learning and re-engage them by leveraging standards-aligned lessons that will honor their backgrounds and foster collaborative, respectful group work. Individual lessons build toward an interdisciplinary problem-based performance task which provides students an opportunity to integrate their learning, strengthen academic skills and engage with complex text and tasks.

4th-6th Steam
Our STEAM program will support Science and Engineering Practices for the NGSS and the Habits of Mind and Social Emotional Learning Standards that enable 21st-century career readiness. Students will engage in a hands-on learning approach that promotes the development and reinforcement of asking questions/defining problems, collecting and interpreting data, logical thinking, and demonstrating the ability to present and critique arguments/conclusions.
