MUSD Water Conservation Measures

Severe drought conditions call for strict water conservation efforts for everyone, and the Milpitas Unified School District is doing all it can to achieve the 30% reduction in water use required by the Santa Clara County Water District. The community will notice much of our landscape turning to golden shades of brown as we make every effort to practice sound water conservation.  Here’s how we are maximizing our resources to save water while ensuring student safety:

• Fields used for physical education and school athletics will be watered just enough to maintain student safety. 
• Pool covers are used on the MHS swimming pool when it is not in use in order to minimize evaporation.
  
• Milpitas High, Pomeroy, Russell and Weller schools use recycled water from the South Bay Water Recycling for landscape irrigation.  
  
• We are collaborating with the City of Milpitas to extend a recycled water pipeline to Burnett, Rancho, and Sinnott for irrigation, as well as the Weller Community Garden.  

• We are piloting a water management system that will track water usage, and will even shutdown the system when it detects a leak. 
  
• Our 2012 bond allows us to retrofit our restrooms with new fixtures that include ultra-low flow urinals, toilets and faucets.
  
• Our proposed new elementary school will capitalize on green technology including recycled water irrigation systems and energy efficient power systems.
