Counseling Services

Parents, teachers, or students can complete a referral for individual counseling sessions. Students may request individual counseling for a variety of reasons. Individual counseling typically lasts 15-30 minutes during a non-instructional time in the student’s schedule. Some students need additional support for what they are going through, so the school counselor may recommend outside counseling to parents.

Blooming Friendships – Healthy Friendships Group
Population: 2nd-5th Grade Students
Focus: Students will improve knowledge of healthy vs. unhealthy friendship words and actions to increase positive interactions between participants and other students
Length: 8 Sessions
Impact: Students will learn friendship skills to build close relationships with peers. Students will practice communication skills to increase positive peer interactions. Students will learn about drama and how that impacts their connection with others.
Group Activities: Session one will be used as an introduction to the group and is for developing a positive group culture. Sessions 2-6 are for learning about different positive and negative components of friendships and practicing promoting positive friendship behaviors. Session 7 is a review session for participants to creatively demonstrate some of what they’ve learned. Session 8 is the closing session and gives time for students to express how they’ve grown through the group. Some of these sessions are titled: How are friendships like gardens; every plant and person are different; what do friendships need; friendship fence lines; problem solving; drama goat. American School Counselor Association mindsets and behaviors covered include creating positive and supportive relationships with other students; demonstrating ethical decision-making and social responsibility; demonstrating empathy; using effective oral communication skills.
Respectful Bengals
Population: 3rd-5th Grade Students
Focus: Students will learn about the importance of respect, how to show respect with words and actions, and how to think about the consequences of their actions.
Length: 6 Sessions
Impact: Students will learn to think about the effects of their actions and will identify ways they can be respectful at home, at school, and in the community.
Group Activities: The group is designed to meet a total of six times. Session titles include: What is respect and why is it important; using respectful words; behaving respectfully; how we make others feel; how my behaviors affect me; and my respect plan. American School Counselor Association mindsets and behaviors covered include building a sense of acceptance, respect, support, and inclusion for self and others in the school environment; responsibility for self and actions; self-discipline and self-control; social maturity and behaviors appropriate to the situation and environment; and effective collaboration and cooperation skills.
Weather the Storm - Resiliency Group
Population: 2nd-4th Grade Students experiencing major life changes and/or identified for needing tier two social emotional support.
Focus: Students will learn skills to build personal resiliency when going through tough situations or developmental challenges.
Length: 10 Sessions
Impact: Students will build resiliency skills to succeed academically and cope with tough situations. Students will show resiliency by increasing attendance and grades. Students will have less office referrals, as they model resiliency and work through challenges in a healthy way.
Group Activities: Session one will be used as an introduction to the group and is for developing a positive group culture. Sessions 2-9 will be learning and practicing skills and beliefs related to developing personal resiliency. Some of these sessions are titled: identifying/expressing emotions, identifying stressors, coping skills, locus of control, hopes and dreams, social support, positive thinking, and problem solving. Session 10 is for closing the group and creating a physical representation (craft) of the sessions. American School Counselor Association mindsets and behaviors covered include create positive and supportive relationships with other students; demonstrate ethical decision-making and social responsibility; demonstrate effective coping skills when faced with a problem; use effective oral communication skills; demonstrate perseverance to achieve goals; and demonstrate ability to overcome barriers to learning.
Worry Warriors – I Am in Control of My Worries!
Population: 3rd-5th Grade Students experiencing worry or anxiety affecting their schoolwork, home life, social relationships, etc.
Focus: Students will learn coping strategies through a cognitive-behavioral approach to understand how worries develop and what they can do to combat them.
Length: 12 Sessions
Impact: Through using a Cognitive-Behavioral approach, students will learn to understand and cope with worries in order to alleviate the effects of anxiety on school performance and family and social relationships.
Group Activities: Session one will be used as an introduction to the group and is for developing a positive group culture. Sessions 2-11 will be learning and practicing CBT skills for worry/anxiousness. Some of these sessions are titled: What is worry; thoughts, feelings, and actions; in or out of my control; thought checking; my responsibilities; and supports. Session 12 is for closing the group and creating a physical representation (craft) of the sessions. American School Counselor Association mindsets and behaviors covered include create positive and supportive relationships with other students; demonstrate effective coping skills when faced with a problem; manage transitions and adapt to change; demonstrate perseverance to achieve goals; and demonstrate ability to overcome barriers to learning.
Sea of Social Skills – All Aboard!
Population: K-1st Grade Students
Focus: Students will learn and practice valuable social skills that contribute to school success.
Length: 8 Sessions
Impact: Students will learn and apply skills such as sharing, taking turns, accepting no & using calming strategies, listening & following directions, stating needs, transitioning activities, and being flexible.
Group Activities: The group is designed to meet a total of eight times. Session titles are listed above in the impact statement. Most lessons consist of a scripted puppet show to model skills, scenario cards/game/practice activity, and group reflection on how to apply skills. A family letter is sent home after every session explaining how we learned and practiced the skill, and suggestions to further reinforce the skills at home. American School Counselor Association mindsets and behaviors covered include responsibility for self and actions; self-discipline and self-control; social maturity and behaviors appropriate to the situation and environment; and effective collaboration and cooperation skills.

Classroom lessons are provided in the ENCORE rotation. Lesson topics are based on a social/emotional needs survey completed by teachers. Topics include conflict resolution, growth mindset, social skills, emotional regulation, organization/study skills, kindness, inclusion, self-esteem, and college/career readiness. Students do activities, games, and crafts after lessons to practice what we have learned.
