AoAC Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is AoAC?

The Academy of Architecture and Construction at Mt. Pleasant High School is a four-year career academy. Career academies are for students who want to attend a post-secondary school or begin a career right after high school. AoAC provides a smaller learning community in which students share academy classes together.

    Who is it for?

Cabarrus County Schools will have open enrollment for the 2022-2023 school year, so any incoming freshman that lives in the Cabarrus County School district will have school of choice as long as they are enrolled in an academy. Our academies are capped at 75 students per cohort. We will fill seats from our feeder school (MPMS) first and then open up to other schools. Program Choice Fair is October 5, 2021 at Cabarrus Arena and Events Center from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Application window is October 5 - December 17, 2021. Parents will be notified by February 1, 2022 of acceptance. Deadline to accept is February 15, 2022.

    How are students admitted?

A lottery is used to fill the spots with a maximum of 30 students. If more than 30 students apply, the lottery is used to determine the order of the wait-list.

Can my student take honors or AP classes?

Yes. In core classes, such as English, Social Studies, Math, and Science, students will be placed in academic or honors level depending on which level they are recommended for. Some of the academy courses are taught at the honors level. Students may also enroll in Advanced Placement courses, however these will not be AoAC classes.

Can AoAC students participate in athletics or clubs?

Yes. AoAC students may try out for sports at the school they attend if they meet eligibility requirements. Students will also be given the opportunity to participate in Skills USA Career and Technical Student Organization and compete at the state and possibly national level. MPHS has many clubs available to all students.

Can my student take other elective courses?

Yes. AoAC students are required to complete two business courses plus three courses in the same career pathway. Many AoAC students will complete multiple AoAC pathways as well as foreign language, fine arts, JROTC, Bible, and PE electives. Students need 11 electives to graduate and most earn 15 elective credits; 5 electives are required for AoAC over their four-year course of study.

Is there a cost for AoAC?

The academy is free of charge. There could be charges for field trips and students may want to purchase personal equipment based on the courses they are taking.

    Is transportation provided?

Transportation is provided only for students living in the MPHS attendance zone. Transportation is not provided for students living outside the MPHS attendance zone.
