Athletes of the MonthAprilArthur Ashe 1943-1993Arthur Ashe was the first and only African American male to win the men's singles at Wimbledon and the US Open.Arthur was the first African American player to be selected to the Davis Cup team and was ranked #1 in the world in 1968. Mr. Ashe created inner city tennis programs for children. He also spoke out against apartheid in South Africa. Quote: "True heroism...is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but urge to serve others whatever the cost."Kayla MontgomeryKayla Montgomery grew up in Winston-Salem, NC and attended Mount Tabor High School. She was playing soccer one day and could suddenly no longer feel her feet. Kayla was diagnosed with MS- multiple sclerosis at age 14. Kayla considered herself slow as a soccer player. She wanted to get faster, so she started running track and cross country. Her coaches have to catch her at the end of races. As her body temperature rises, the numbness in her legs increases until she can no longer feel her legs. Coaches apply ice to Kayla's body to "calm the misfiring nerve fibers beneath her numb skin." Kayla went on from high school and runs for Lipscomb University in TN. Quote: "Every day I run, it might be my last day---I could easily wake up tomorrow and not be able to move."May Athlete of the MonthStephen CurryStephen Curry is a guard for the Golden State Warriors NBA basketball team. He recently one the MVP award for the second year in a row. This year, Steph crushed the NBA record for most 3 pointers in a season. Last year he set the record with over 280, but this season he set a new record with over 400! Steph was born in Ohio, but he grew up in Charlotte. He attended Davidson college. His dad, Dell Curry, was a great shooter for the Charlotte Hornets. Curry is currently helping his team in the NBA playoffs.
