Sociology
GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION
This course will serve as an introduction to sociology, the study of society. The course will challenge students to understand sociological theories, apply them to social problems, and compare cultures so that students may expand their sense of personal and social responsibility. Students will also examine the methods employed by sociologists and the effects of sociological research on cultures, the market and politics. Skills to be developed in this course include, but are not limited to, reading, writing, communication, critical thinking, and note-taking.
COURSE CURRICULUM OUTLINE
The course curriculum for High School Sociology is provided by the NC Department of Public Instruction. Our course will cover the following major objectives
- UNIT I – Discipline of Sociology, Research Methods, Culture
- UNIT II – How Socialization Regulates Individual Behavior
- UNIT III - Crime and Deviance
- UNIT IV – Human Relationships across Inequality and Social Stratification
- UNIT V – Social Institutions
- UNIT VI – Social Change and Modernization

CANVAS – All class information (notes, assignments) will be posted to CANVAS for this class. Students will have 24/7 access to the material for this class. Students can find the link to CANVAS on the JMRHS homepage ("Useful Links" on the left-hand side of the webpage).
While you were out
I am aware that students will miss class work. I will post all presentations and assignments to CANVAS for students to pull from the internet. It is the student’s responsibility to complete missed work/assignments/tests. I will cross-check students on missed work, but it is their responsibility. Please talk to me if you have questions about missed work, typically at the beginning or end of class. Make up quizzes/tests can be completed asynchronously (at the students discretion and time desired).
Grading
Major assessments (tests, projects, papers) = 40%
Minor assessments (classwor, homework, quizzes, small projects) = 60%
First Quarter: 37.5%
Second Quarter: 37.5%
Final Exam = 25%
