Dr. James Crawford is the PROUD Superintendent for the Bremerton School District.
Dr. Crawford is committed to creating equitable educational experiences based on excellence for all students in the Bremerton School District. His own educational and life experiences growing up in Bremerton provide meaningful context and personal connections to the District’s motto, "We are Bremerton."
A 1998 Bremerton High School graduate, who overcame his own adversity, led to dreams of learning, serving, teaching, and leading. He attributes much of his success to the Bremerton School District and community of Bremerton who believed in him as a young teenager and pushed him to his full potential.
Dr. Crawford started in education as a student representative to the Bremerton School Board in 1997. He later became a high school English and debate teacher. He has served as an elementary and secondary school principal as well as Chief Academic Officer in Federal Way Public Schools and adjunct faculty for both WSU and UW. Dr. Crawford most recently served as Senior Director of High School Academics and CTE for Portland Public Schools.
Dr. Crawford earned his undergraduate degree from Washington State University, his Master’s degree from the University of Washington, and his Doctor of Education from Washington State University, where his dissertation was named Dissertation of the Year by the Washington Educational Research Association. Dr. Crawford has also earned the distinguished award of National Emerging Leader in Education from the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development.
