From the Desk of Dr. Halley: Critical Need for Bus Drivers & Custodians

Dear Putnam County R-I Community,

I am writing this letter to inform you about our current transportation and custodial status and implore you to help. We have been advertising for openings for bus drivers and custodians for months with minimal inquiries and even less follow-through. It has quickly become a critical shortage situation.

The best-case scenario would be to have good candidates apply and fill those positions.

However, in the interim, we are faced with challenges that only provide so many solutions.

Several amazing staff members have stepped up when possible, driving a bus route when their teaching or coaching duties allow, but that is not a sustainable solution and only contributes to burnout which we are trying so hard to prevent.

Therefore, until more drivers and custodians apply, we will be forced to explore alternative solutions. Those could be the following:

  1. Driver (A) would complete their morning route and then immediately begin picking up students from a second route. This would mean some students would not arrive at school until after 9:15 am. So for this example Driver (A) would complete their evening route, and would then would return to school to pick up their second group of students to transport home.

  2. Activities, field trips, and events (including sports) could be delayed, rescheduled, or canceled.

This message is not meant to scare you, instead, its intention is simply to keep you informed of what very well might happen soon in the future.

At this point I would like to call you to action – if you know of someone who would be a great candidate, PLEASE ENCOURAGE THEM TO APPLY.  We desperately need help to keep our facilities clean for our students, and drivers to make sure all our students have transportation not just to school but also to activities.
