You Asked, We Answered
It all began last Fall when Dr. Halley asked Britten Hicks and myself to join him at a communications seminar with representatives from other schools. We learned schools have a common problem; how do you get the word out on what’s happening at school? Since you don’t know if you don’t ask, we asked. Parents, grandparents, staff and students were asked to participate in a forum that met several times this past Spring. Our purpose was figuring out how to better communicate school information to parents, students and the community. The conversations were spirited and very enlightening. We heard that the school website was very hard to navigate, that Facebook is a favorite for many (but not all!), and that receiving notifications from the school by text message is very much the preference of those under forty. Excessive registrations paperwork for students was a frustration voiced by many parents. A need for better communication from coaches was a topic, especially regarding travel plans. Notifications regarding school lunch balances definitely needed some work as well. Podcasts came up in discussion as a completely new way to communicate. We listened and changes are being made.
You asked, we answered with a number of significant changes. Our school website has been completely rebuilt by Haley Watt over the summer, including much easier access to the school calendar. Check it out at https://www.putnamcountyr1.net . The school website is also a great way to keep current on school happenings and has links to PCR-I Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat. Registration paperwork has been greatly streamlined and notifications are moving toward options based methods for those who prefer a text to a call. (Text Y to 67587 to receive text alerts from School Messenger) As you’re out and about in the community, you’ll notice table toppers with current information on school events. Our local newspaper continues to be a source of school news available both online and on paper. Podcasts and videos will be involving both staff and students showcasing news and accomplishments and are found on the school’s Facebook page. Dr. Halley recently spoke with track and golf students on camera as they headed out to State competition. This was the first student interview and I’m looking forward to more to come.
People who took time out of their busy lives to participate in last Spring’s forum have made a difference in how things are done at PCR-I. Changes that have been made and are in the works will be seen for years to come. One of the best things about small town living is easy access to the people in charge. If you have an idea that could make this process better, please reach out to Dr. Halley’s office. You will be heard.
