Welcome!
School Counseling is a program designed for professional school counselors to give support, offer encouragement, and teach skills in the areas of personal-social, academic, and career development. School counseling helps students emotionally and socially so they can concentrate on school tasks. A school counselor guides, counsels, collaborates, consults, coordinates, and connects with students, parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and school community in the most effective manner to provide support and help students develop into healthy individuals.

What do counselors do:
- Provides immediate and short-term individual counseling
- Meets with students in small groups
- Teaches classroom guidance lessons
- Works collaboratively with teachers and staff
- Consults with parents

What a student might talk about in the counseling office:
- Feelings about himself/herself
- Difficulty making friends
- A family problem
- A school problem
- A fear or worry
- A physical concern

What a student might do in the counseling office:
- Talk about things that are important to children
- Use puppets to help express feelings and problems
- Talk about feelings
- Work on a plan to reach a goal
- Read stories that help students learn and understand more about themselves
- Go to a safe place to calm down when feeling upset
- Play games to learn ways to relate to others

When can counselors breach confidentiality:
- If a child presents danger to themselves or others
- If there is known or suspected child abuse or neglect
- In legal proceedings, in response to a subpoena
