• 1st Quarter ELA Curriculum

    In the first quarter of 4th Grade ELA class, your child will explore realistic fiction texts.  Our class read-aloud is "The Tiger Rising".  With this book, the following skills will be modeled:

    1.  How to cite evidence to support an idea.

    2.  How to determine the theme of a text.

    3.  How to effectively summarize a fictional story.

    4.  How to specifically describe the characters, the setting, and important events in a text by using concrete evidence.

    5.  How to compare and contrast first person and third person point of view.

     

    Students will use their book club books to practice applying these skills.

     

    1st Quarter Writing Curriculum

    In writing, we will discuss how to write narratives with focus, organization, and relevant content.  In addition, we will talk about aspects of style and grammar. Students will write their own narrative about an important event in their lives.

     

    1st Quarter Social Studies Curriculum

    In Social Studies, students will learn about the pre-colonial era in North Carolina.  We will discuss the various Native American groups that lived in the area.  In addition, we will learn about the migration patterns of various groups of people.  We will end our unit by discussing when, where, and why Europeans settled in North Carolina.
