Speech & Language Therapy

  •

    Eligibility:

The Speech and Language Program serves students in four general areas:

    • Articulation – how a student pronounces the “sounds” in our language. For example, does the student lisp or substitute “w” for “r”?
    • Language – how a student communicates verbally, including listening skills, use of grammar, and the ability to express ideas
    • Voice – does the student have chronic hoarseness, a nasal sound? Does the student use an appropriate  volume and pitch?
    • Fluency – Is the student able to speak without an unusual amount of repetition or hesitation?

    Screening:

The Student Study Team determines if screening and/or evaluation are recommended for a student. If a parent has a concern about their child’s speech, they may speak to their child’s teacher or the building principal about this process. Parents are invited to be included in all discussions of their child.

    Therapy:

If a child needs speech and language therapy, the special education process will be followed to develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP) to outline the student’s specific needs. Therapy is provided at school within the school day, and is coordinated with other staff and programs. Therapy may be individual or in small groups.
