In December 2023, following the resignation of Superintendent Peter Bang-Knudsen, the school board appointed Assistant Superintendent Amii Thompson as BISD’s Superintendent. Amii is a talented administrator whose dedication to the district is incredibly high. She has worked at BISD for more than 20 years in a variety of roles, including Executive Director of Teaching and Learning for Elementary, principal of x̌alilc Elementary and taught first and second grades. Relationship-building is at the core of her work and her student-focused leadership is in alignment with BISD's District Improvement Plan.
BISD's Board of Directors has decided to wait until late Fall 2024/ early Winter 2025 to begin the hiring process for a permanent superintendent. The superintendent search process is time-intensive and a key aspect of the process is receiving input from students, staff and the community. Given all that BISD is facing during the 2023-24 school year, the board did not feel there was collective capacity to run a meaningful search. As such, Amii will continue as superintendent through the 2024-25 school year.
THE ROLE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE
The main responsibilities of the Superintendent's Office include:- Secretary to the Board of Directors
- Coordination of School Board meetings
- Maintenance of School Board policies and procedures
- Leadership and support in Human Resources
- District ombudsman
- Liaison for school/community groups
- Employee progressive discipline and due process
- Coordination of certificated staff recruitment program
- Collective bargaining and employee regulations
- New teacher orientation
- Student discipline hearing officer
- Title IX and Affirmative Action Officer
- District media liaison
- Oversees district communications and public relations
