Minimum Requirements:

To qualify, you must have a bachelor's degree.

Rate of Pay and Hours (As of 2-1-2022):

Certificated Substitute rate of pay is $200 per day. Half day rate is $100.

Assignments are given in half day and full day increments.

Step 1: Prepare your Application Materials

The Bainbridge Island School District requires the following for applicants to our substitute positions:

• Cover Letter
• Resume
• One (1) Letter of Reference, preferably from a current or most recent supervisor
• Three (3) Confidential References: These are identified through our online application system. The person(s) you list will receive an automatic email from our system to fill out a confidential reference form.
• Create an account in the OSPI E Certification system, if you have not yet. This will get the ball rolling so that if you are selected to be a substitute, you will be able to potentially start sooner.

Step 1: Online Application

Submit your application through our online system (see "How to Apply" above). Applications will be screened, and complete applications will be considered for an interview. 

Step 2: Interview

Once your application is complete, you will receive a message from our Substitute Coordinator to schedule a phone or zoom interview. 

Step 3: Reference Checks

We will also be conducting phone reference checks in tandem with scheduling your interviews.

Once selected, and per Washington State law, all school based staff need to be fingerprinted prior to starting work with us. You can work with Kelly Spitz and April Murray to find the most convenient place to fingerprint.

Bainbridge Island Police Department (BIPD):

To schedule fingerprints, call BIPD 206-842-5211. Appointments are required.

Olympic ESD

If you live on the Kitsap Peninsula, it may be more convenient for you to get your fingerprints done at the Olympic ESD in Bremerton.

All substitute teachers need to have an active Washington State teaching certificate. If you are not currently certified and have been selected to be a substitute, we will request an Emergency Substitute Certificate. Already Certified:

If you have a current Washington State teaching certificate, you do not need to take additional steps for certification. We do recommend you obtain a Washington state substitute certificate. You can visit the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) at www.k12.wa.us/certification for more information.

Not Certified:

If you do not hold a current teaching certificate, you will want to create an account through the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) to apply for an emergency certificate. Visit this link for specifics on the Emergency Substitute Certificate. 

Classified employees are employees who work in non-certificated roles across the district. They range from special education paraeducators, custodians, bus drivers, office, and food and nutrition services staff.

We have a consistent need for substitute in all areas, and especially for in person special education paraeducator and bus drivers.

Rate of Pay and Hours:

The rate of pay is tied to the wage scales for the Bainbridge Island Educational Support Professional Association (BIESPA) and our Non-Represented wage scale. The substitute rate is paid at 90% of the first step on the hourly wage scale. For example, a substitute paraeducator would make $21.54/hour.
