Rocky Point High School seniors Simone Carmody, Jacob Donovan, Sofia Haviland, Erin Lynch, Emma Maher, Parker Matzen and Isabella Rooney were honored with AP Seminar Scholar medals by AP Capstone program teachers Rachel Hludzinski and Jessica Sciarrone.

The AP Capstone program is a two-year diploma program that requires students to complete two yearlong courses (AP Seminar and AP Research) to be eligible for the AP Capstone certificate or the AP diploma depending on the additional AP courses that they may have completed successfully throughout their high school careers. Unlike traditional AP courses with a single end-of-year assessment, the AP Capstone courses are project-based and evaluate the students’ mastery of skills through group projects, presentations and individual essays completed throughout the year. Instead of focusing on one specific academic discipline, AP Capstone is interdisciplinary: students are empowered to create research projects based on topics of personal interest and are assessed on the critical thinking, research, collaboration, time management and presentation skills needed to complete their projects. These courses prepare students for college-level work by encouraging them to analyze issues from multiple perspectives, propose solutions to real-world problems, integrate knowledge across various subjects as well as formally defend their research.

Mrs. Hludzinski, and Mrs. Sciarrone shared this about the program’s inaugural senior class, “the seven seniors enrolled in our inaugural year of the AP Capstone program as an elective without the opportunity to receive the Capstone certificate or diploma from the College Board, thus, demonstrating and modeling for their peers what it truly means to have a growth mindset. We want to recognize their ambition, talent and dedication to learning. We proudly acknowledge their academic achievements in the AP Capstone program this school year and hope the research, time management, presentation and collaboration skills acquired serve them well in college and beyond. Each student enrolled in the program has contributed greatly to our learning community over the past ten months and we are so proud of each of them!”

The students can wear their medals on graduation day as a reflection of all their hard work! Congratulations!
