Principal's Message

May/June 2024

Dear FJC Families,

It is hard to believe that we are only a few weeks away from the end of another incredible school year.  This time of year is always bittersweet as we try to savor our moments together as we look forward to the summer and a new beginning next fall.  It is a time to say, again, how grateful we are for the team of teachers, staff, students, and families that together have accomplished so much.

As we round out the year together, please take note of the following dates in May:
May 6- Earth Day Assembly (Grades 1 & 2)
May 8- FJC Spring Concert, HS Aud @ 7PM
May 14- PTA Meet the Candidates, HS Aud @ 7PM
May 14 & 15- Kindergarten Orientation
May 17- 3rd Grade Orientation
May 21- School Budget Vote & Elections, HS Gym, 7am-9pm
May 23- Second Grade Field Trip to Fink’s Farm
May 27 & 28- Memorial Day (School Closed)

As we enter June, we have a lot to look forward to.  We begin the month with grade-wide field days where we invite families to join us for some outdoor fun.  Next, we have the 2nd grade moving up ceremony that will also take place in the backfields.  Finally, we end the school year with three half-days from June 24-June 26.  More information about each event will follow in the coming weeks.  Please note the dates below:

June 4- Kindergarten Field Day
June 5- First Grade Field Day
June 6- Second Grade Field Day
June 7- Field Day Rain Date
June 10- Board of Education Mtg., HS Aud @7pm
June 18- Grade 2 Moving Up Ceremony, FJC Back Field @10:30am
June 19- School Closed (Juneteenth Day)
June 21- End of Third Trimester/Marking Period
June 24-26- Half Day
June 26- Last Day of School

Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership, and for the gift of your children throughout the year.  If you have any questions, or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Gratefully yours,

Jason Westerlund, Principal

Nicole Pletka, Assistant Principal

Inclement Weather Closings

When school is closed due to inclement weather, bad road conditions, or other emergencies, please listen to one of the following radio/TV stations for the announcements regarding Rocky Point Schools: WALK Storm Center 97.5 FM; WBLI /WBAB Storm Center 106.1 FM; WRCN 103.9 FM; NEWS 12 LI

Connect-ED

The Rocky Point Union Free School District uses Connect-ED, a school-to-parent telephone notification system, as part of our efforts to communicate more effectively with parents or guardians. Connect-ED will enable the Rocky Point Union Free School District to notify families immediately in the event of a snow day or school-wide emergency. The system can deliver up to 3,000 messages within minutes—ensuring that you quickly know what's going on. To receive these messages, FJC must have your up-to-date contact information. If you move, change jobs, or obtain a new cell phone number, be sure to log onto the eSchool Parent Portal to update your information so you won't miss a single Connect-ED message.

Two-Hour Delayed Opening

When road conditions in the early morning are hazardous but are expected to improve rapidly as the morning progresses, the District may utilize a two-hour delayed opening for all schools. Students will report to their bus stops exactly two hours later than they normally would. Dismissal for all schools will be at their normal times. This delayed opening may also be used for other emergencies. Notice of the delayed opening will be made as early as possible and broadcast on the listed radio stations and TV-Cablevision News 12 and the District's Connect-ED Telephone Notification System will be activated. In the event that we cannot transport students to school as a result of a “two-hour delayed opening” based on forecast predictions for improved weather and conditions by 7 AM, school officials will announce that schools will be closed. It is important that you continue to listen carefully for just such announcements.

Inclement Bus Stops

Inclement weather bus stops are available on the eSchool Parent Portal. Due to the geographic nature of our area, “inclement” weather stops will be utilized when adverse road conditions exist. At various times during the winter season, inclement weather bus stops will be used to ensure the safety of our student population. The use of these stops may be necessary at any time during the school day, without prior announcement. Parents should listen to the radio stations or call First Student Transit at 744-2204 if they have any questions regarding whether or not the Inclement Weather Bus Stops will be used. The district's voice mail will also have the announcement. Please make arrangements for someone to meet children at these alternate stops.

Students in grades K-2 had an out of this world camp experience this week as part of the SCOPE Summer Safari Elementary Enrichment Program held at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School. Working alongside teacher Kim Smokler, the young scientists learned all about following the procedures of the scientific method and used their new skills to create magic milk, Martian soil, telescopes and more. The camp was a fun way to explore new interests, work on projects with partners and reinforce their observational, research and experimental capabilities.

FJC hosted a breakfast with the Principals on May 30. Ms. Shakia Hall, Director of Child Nutrition, spearheaded the event and worked collaboratively with Ms. Bianco from the cafeteria staff to create a special opportunity that highlights the importance of a healthy breakfast for students. The event included a special addition to the menu: fruit and yogurt waffle cones, along with other healthy choices. Students were excited to spend extra time with Mr. Westerlund and Ms. Pletka as they enjoyed the special treats.

Choo Choo Choosing a Career

Choo Choo Choosing a Career thumbnail259054

FJC and JAE celebrated the importance of education and choosing a career path during College and Career Week. Students shared their excitement for the future by participating in spirit days – wearing Rocky Point gear for “Your Future Starts NOW!” day; wearing red, white and blue or camouflage for “Be All You Can Be!” day; donning college/university gear for “I’m Geared Up for College!” Day; wearing bright colors for “Your Future Is Bright!” day and dressing up to share what they would like to have as a career for the final day of “Career Day!”

The elementary Career Day was organized by JAE guidance counselor Mrs. Jean Costa and FJC guidance counselor Mrs. Jamie Adamski. Family members submitted career videos that were shared across the grade levels.

“We want to express our gratitude to the families who submitted career videos,” Mrs. Adamski said. “We had careers from pilots to lawyers to wedding officiants, physical therapists and others. Such a great experience for our Virtual Career Fair.”
