The Rocky Point High School chapter of the National English Honor Society hosted its third annual Poetry Open Mic Night – a night dedicated to sharing and appreciating the language of poetry!
Last October, under the supervision of club advisers Ms. Christine Blume and Mrs. Rachel Hludzinski, club officers applied for and won a project grant hosted by the National English Honor Society organization with the hope of using the award money to fund and host this year’s Poetry Open Mic Night in honor of National Poetry Month. The organization awards a limited number of grants each semester to support local chapters in activities that will be enhanced or made possible by the grant monies.
“Together, club officers – President Parker Matzen, Vice President Jake Donovan, Treasurer Renee Ortiz, Secretary Emma Mahar, Public Relations Chair Avery Ward – and all the other awesome members of our club, worked very hard at each of our weekly club meetings to bring this night to the Rocky Point school community,” Ms. Blume said. “We believe that it is our honor as NEHS members to not only inspire the appreciation for literature in our school and community, but to create spaces in which free expression of this appreciation may be fostered.”
Held in the high school library, Poetry Night was a perfect opportunity for Rocky Point students and community to come together in an intimate setting to share and hear an eclectic selection of both published and original poetry.
“This year we had 18 students read original selections,” Ms. Blume said. “Overall, the students did such a wonderful job reading, listening and supporting one another throughout the evening.”
